no running at playtime

I have just found out that my dc's primary has a 'no running' rule at morning playtime. I was Shock at this and intend to question it. Is this fairly normal practice in schools today?

No!!!! My DCs school takes them all out for a run after assembly, before lessons. And lots and lots of running at playtime.

mumoverseas · 06/09/2010 13:20

Shock oh FFS that is ridiculous, they are kids of course they are going to run!

southeastastra · 06/09/2010 13:20

no definitely question it

Tippychoocks · 06/09/2010 13:22

Very odd. Is that the full story? Perhaps morning playtime is very busy so they are asked to do runnning games at a later, staggered playtime or is it just after an exercise session so they are supposed to be winding down? Question it.

bargainhuntingbetty · 06/09/2010 13:23

My DD said that they were not allowed to run in the Primary 1 end of the playground in case they ran into the new wee ones and knocked them over Shock, I mean do kids never fall??? Its health and safety gone mad.

BeenBeta · 06/09/2010 13:31

Children need to run/climb/jump about in order to be able to concentrate later in lessons.

Bonkers rule!

Who did you find out from? If it was from anyone under the age of 18, check the facts before you go in all guns blazing!

booyhoo · 06/09/2010 13:55

that's madness, even i like a bit of a skip during the day to burn off a bit of energy.

definitely find out if it is true.

friendly · 06/09/2010 22:47

My daughter and her friend told me. Have checked with a friend of mine and she says it's true. Will be careful though. It is to do with the younger children and I agree they of course must be kept safe. However this school is so lucky, it has a school field just behind the tarmac playground, which is rarely used at playtime (lunchtime play in summer I think). So it isn't a space issue but maybe a staffing one?

I can see asking the bigger ones not to run at the reception end of the playground whilst the Year Rs find their feet. I knwo a fall wont kill them but it could knock their confidence

But no running? No thats barmy.

moajab · 06/09/2010 23:12

Crazy - if it's that big a problem they should just let the Yr Rs have their own playtime for a few weeks. I'm sure all those 4 year olds love running around. What will they make of a school which doesn't let them?

swill72 · 07/09/2010 23:17

Are you sure it's morning play, and not just for the beginning of the school day? When the children come onto the playgrounds first thing in the morning at my school, they're not allowed to run around so they come into school in a calm manner, rather than whipped up into a frenzy! Morning and lunch breaks are completely normal, active breaks.

definitely morning play. Going to ask at curriculum meetings. thanks everyone,

DD2 had this at school. Plus complete pin drop silence during lunch.

Is not at that school anymore.

Algebra18MinusPiEquals16 · 09/09/2010 00:41

oh good lord.

Cat2405 · 09/09/2010 17:53

Shock Do question it. Please post back what the the school say, I'll be watching this with interest.

Maggotts - also have had the 'silence-at-lunchtime' rule!
