Quick poll,
am I being nuts considering taking pushchair to get (just)4yo DD from school in her first couple of weeks. Its a 1.75 walk home, and she's doing 3 full days a week.
She gets tired quickly, moans loudly persistently and I'm expecting being at school all day will take a lot out of her.

My vote is to use a pushchair if you can and if you and your DD want to - the first term at school is tiring enough especially for the very young ones. And agree with others to ignore any other parents or children who disapprove. I used the pushchair for most of the first term for DD who is young for her year - mostly because the walk is up a ridiculously steep hill and not suitable for scooters. I was nervous about reactions but only got a couple of naturally curious comments from children and no looks from parents, just a few 'we would do the same if we had your walk to do' comments. I think she managed to get more out of school by not being completely worn out before the register had even been taken. The second term she quite easily transitioned to walking. Agree that scooter option also worth a try if flat-ish.

geraldine I think the reason people care (in my case anyhow) is that they may be worried about the epidemic of childhood obesity and how it will impact on their DCs' healthcare (via the NHS) in the future.

And before anyone jumps up and shouts "what epidemic? No kids I know are overweight" I would estimate that at least half of the children in DD's class of 9 year-olds weigh more than they should.

BTW civil if that's right that 93% of chn are driven to school then I am judgey about that too! See above for reason.

Tho in our school I would estimate that well over 50% walk.

Never seen a school girl in a buggy. My dd walked to playgroup and back when she was 3 and it was up a very steep hill and about a mile and a half. Sounds like yours gets tired because she needs more practice, or because she knows if she pretends to be you will push her, unless there is a medical reason.
