Which swimming trunks for school lessons

Ds1 has just been told they are starting swimming lessons next week, he is a complete non-swimmer, but we have worked hard to get him over his aversion to getting water in his face and he has enjoyed being in the sea during the holidays. So, although I am worried about him, I know I am being daft and he will be fine and most probably love it.

I do have one question though. Ds has been through a tough time being bullied over the past couple of years, with the bullies finding the tiniest things to pick-on iyswim. We dealt with it last year and although, he's only been back for two days - so far so good this year.

So, my question is, what sort of swimming trunks are the best type to get him? Ordinarily I wouldn't worry, but I would hate to choose the 'wrong style' and end up giving the bullies something new to pick on.

Outside of school he wears the loose shorts style ones, but I understand that these are often not accepted by schools for lessons.

Would these or something similar be along the right lines, or am I way off the mark?

TIA

You are right about schools/pools generally not accepting the baggy long style for lessons (although you'll always get some boys who still wear them).

The ones on your link are the sort that 6yo DS wears to his swimming lessons, and in fact most of the boys do. Occasional ones wear the Speedo-brief style.

Hope the bullying has stopped for good.

Thank you so much.

I feel daft to be worrying about it, but like I said, I don't want to give the bullies even the slightest opportunity to start again. So much of it is beyond my control, but I want know that I've done everything that is within my power.

I'm a bit cross with the school for not providing a list of equipment actually. I know some schools/pools insist of swimming caps, but don't have a clue whether or not he will need one. Knowing them, they'll probably give us a kit list the day before they're due to go. Hmm

Thanks PixieOnaLeaf. He doesn't need goggles anymore, thank goodness. He used to have a real problem with getting his face wet and wouldn't go swimming because of it, but we've been working with him and he's fine now.

The ones you have linked to are the type that my DS1 chooses to wear. He has baggy ones but doesn't like them. I@m sure they'll be fine.

Sorry to hear about the bullying.

LIZS · 04/09/2010 12:33

Those are similar to our school regulation ones , except significantly cheaper Hmm

Thanks folks. Am feeling very reassured by all your responses. Have ordered those trunks in black and grey with a dark grey bath towel to match.

Hopefully there's nothing there for the bullies to pick on. Smile

I'm glad you posted this, I was wondering the same thing, for the same reason! Smile

Hope it helped you as well as me mankyscotslass. Has your ds suffered from bullying as well then?

Do try to find out about the swimming caps too, our school need them and have the child's name written in large felt-tip pen on them so that the teacher can direct her comments to the appropriate child in the pool.

basildonbond · 05/09/2010 00:24

can he swim already? if he can, the 'cool' thing for boys to wear is jammers like these, but they really need to be able to swim properly otherwise it looks a bit silly! And whatever style you get, make sure it's not too big - most kids I see at the pool are wearing trunks/jammers which are at least 2 sizes too big

moosemama · 05/09/2010 00:38

Thanks annh, I will ask about swimming caps on Monday. I've already sourced some just in case, but I was going to buy black to go with his trunks - that's no good if he might need his name written on it.

Thanks for your reply baslidonbond. No, he can't swim at all.

He 8, but very small for his age with tiny hips and waist and a non-existent bottom. (He doesn't get that from his mother! Grin)

I was a bit concerned about what size would fit and ordered both 5-6 and 7-8 so we can see which ones fit the best and he is most comfortable wearing.

Really must go to bed now. Am far to old to be up past midnight!

Yes, Ds has had some problems at school, he wears glasses, and is one of the younger ones in his year, plus small for his age.

Even at one point in YR1 he got picked on for wearing briefs or boxers at PE they are not cool....we got him the tight fitting trunks and it stiopped. Hmm

It seems to have settles down now, but I am very aware of not doing anything to start it up again.

moosemama · 05/09/2010 18:35

We are the same. The briefs/boxers thing seems fairly universal for teasing amongst boys, but then again, they'll always seem to manage to find something to pick on.

Like you, we are constantly vigilant to try and take evasive action iyswim.

Hope he has a better year this year.
