Letter for teacher - on first day

Any teachers there?

Would it be helpful for the teacher of a Year 5 child to be told that the child lost a grandparent the previous week?

I thought it might be seen as a bit OTT writing to some poor teacher who's never even met you. I'm sure they're up to their eyes in it on the first day of term.

As a teacher I would find that information very useful.

yes definietyly!! When I was in year 4, december 20, my dad dies,, so just finished school then, when we came back to school in jan, my mum told my teacher... just incase i was upset etc

I teach Year 5 and would want to know.
Sometimes at this point of the year we do things like 'who is in your family?' etc. Which could cause upset.

We tell the school everything from when my Mum was diagnosed with cancer, to it being terminal, and when she died.

Our school offers counselling to students whose parents are divorcing, to bereaved children, even if they have lost a pet and are upset. There may be something at your school too.

Yes do. I have always done things like that. Just in case my DCs have been either upset or said something.

At least then the teacher is aware and can understand any remarks made that might otherwise sound "odd".
