ds started school yesterday and i mistakenly thought he finished at 1 so packed a lunch for him. another parent told me he finished at 12 so that was fine. when i collected him he said that at break the teacher told them "you only eat 1 thing at break and that it ws to be fruit." totally fine that he was told to eat his fruit at break but i thought he would have been able to eat his yoghurt or cereal bar aswell. is this normal that thet are only allowed 1 thing at break? i have nor problem if itis normal i am just comparing it with what he would normally have for his snack at home.

Different schools have different rules. It sounds like they want to enforce a healthy eating policy (and probably want to reduce litter too).

I would make sure he has a substantial breakfast if you think he might be hungry at break time.

Usually they eat their snack on the trot either at break or just before. Yoghurt is far too messy and too many items take too long and he won't get play time. It's good they encourage fruit usually by end of term all everyone has is a biscuit.

he eats a good lunch aswell when he is at home so presuming all his lunch will be allowed he wil eat a good lunch at school too. for breakfast he has cereal, banana, yoghurt drink, toast and sometimes orange juice aswell so it is a good big breakfast.

never thought of the time and messiness issue with yoghurts.

I'll just stick with teachers rules and send his fruit for break. we don't tend to have biscuits so he wouldn't be expecting one for break or lunch anyway, unless he sees the other kids with them of course.

I'm just comparing with what he eats for snack at home TMMJ. he would usually have fruit and a yoghurt or some cheese with crackers.

He only has 15 minutes to go to the loo wash his hands eat his snack and play with his friends I'm afraid it doesn't give a great deal of time to eat more than 1 thing

fruit for break is fine. dd's have a choice of 2 different fruits or their cucumber hwich is in the lunch bags as well.

they have huge packed lunches though, filled with lots of little nibbly bits. as they find it easier that way.

ProfYaffle · 02/09/2010 12:44

Just fruit at dd1's school too, it's fine. Makes sure she eats her lunch anyway.

just asked him today did he eat his apple and he said he only got to eat a bit of it as he didn't have time to eat it all. he has just had his lunch but not all of it so i guess he isn't hungry anyway. thank you all. can you tell this is my PFB? Grin

Sounds like for 5 years old he I'd eating so much food at home. In school for a snack we allow one snack, usually fruit or something similar like a breakfast bar. There really isn't time to eat lots especially as he'll need to put his coat on, get out to play, toilet and have a run around.

Our school they get free fruit at morning break, so either banana apple or orange
We dont provide it and they seem to survive till lunchtime Wink
