Hi

With the approach of the new term looming I was wondering about this; what kind of levels would you expect a pupil to have got at the end of year one to be offered extension work or to be considered as gifted and talented going into year two?

Thanks.

I would consider my nephew now going into year 3 gifted and talented in Maths and reading. His general knowlage is also very good

At 3 was reading and understanding the sports pages of The Times. ]
He likes to read the teletext and the news pages on the computer and will do his own reasearch into a topic. IE he wanted to know which presedents were carved into MT Rushmore(sp) as no1 knew he googled ot himself and told us. He knows all his tables and likes to go on to look at the 13 14 15 16 can add, subtract devide numbers in their 1000s.

He understands about fractions etc.

He has NEVER been pushed.

Thats more what I would consider GandT
Sorry about spellings

SaliMali1 he sounds fantastic! Agree that sounds more like a really gifted person, rather than the old top 10% some are being forced into doing. - I have had to do that at a previous school but not at my present one.

Conversely, I have also worked at a yet another different school where we classed the bottom 10% as SEN just to wangle funds. It's all a big con really. :(

I know its different in Wales though we don't have the same GadT.

The head I am working for ATM is using SEN money for other things not SEN!! Which meens that 4 or 5 children miss out.

My nephew is disabled and has physical problems but we are so lucky to have such a happy able boy.

It is all a big con.

DD was G&T. We were delighted but all was not well - things did not stack up and as time went by she was totally struggling with G&T courses she was asked to go on, work she was being given etc. We questioned and questioned and trusted the teachers and headteacher. We got her YR4 optional SATs paper completely (no scores/marks told) independently assessed by LEA.

Report was sent to school by LEA, as could not be sent to us. Headteacher forged that report amending not only independent assessors scores but also the substance of the report. She was trying to hide significant over-assessment and incorrect G&T status within the school in an attempt to big up the school.

We moved DCs immediately. Poor DD was assessed afresh at her new school and was placed into a phonics group! OMG I cannot tell you what this has done to her self-confidence. She's a bright child and she knew deep down she didn't belong with other G&Ts on the courses she was sent but how in heavens name do you console a crying child when her end of YR5 report is a level below where she was assessed to be at the end of YR4?

G&T labelling - can destroy a childs self-esteem Angry Sad.
