Did you enjoy your schooling days?

I went to about 7 schools only really liked 2 of them.
I was a late starter due to illness; and
that may have prejudiced my view of schooling.

I think one to one tuition might have helped me; but no such thing in my day.

On the whole I think schools have improved greatly since my days; but not all people in my age group would agree with me. Nil desperandum epidural.

why didn't your parents let you move to a different school cola if they let you sit the entrance exams 3 x, so for 3 different schools?

teameric you must love MN then! lol

Grin I can take it now I'm older, and more bitter and cynical!

I enjoyed primary immensely, and loathed secondary.
I realise now it's because I am a bit of an oddball in some ways. I've moved around a lot and haven't always felt like an oddball. I think I 'work' in some places and not others. I certainly didn't in my highland secondary school.

ZZZenAgain - never got a satisfactory answer from my parents on that - sadistic tendancies??? Basically every day I asked to leave, so they said to me if you pass the entrance exam you can go to the alternative, I think they hoped/thought I wouldn't pass the exams, but I passed them all, and they said but you are at the best school you are staying there. I passed a fourth entrance exam for 6th form, but did not trust them to allow me to go, and as was of age to leave and make own choice I was out of there.

teameric that was mainly the reason I didn't like my school.

I loved school all the way through but I was a bit of a dreamer in primary, but enjoyed the social side of it. I'm an only child so everyday at school was like christmas for me.
Secondary was great until I hit 13 when I became bored and disruptive. I had caught up, exceded where I should have been and was bored. Not content to dream, so I cross questioned all teachers. I must have been a complete pain in the arse. I wished away the last few years although in retrospect I enjoyed that time, just in a hurry to grow up. Now I wish I could go back. I do of sorts, to teach maths and I think school is an easier place to be now. Kids have it easier in many ways. I remember at 8, having to work on projects independantly and being expected to work in far more self directed way. Now so much teaching time is given to behaviour and the social element of co-operative working that just like all PLC's no one takes responsibility, least of all the child over their own work.
I expain to my children that its not just the outcome in education, but its the journey, that is the character forming bit.

I hated primary school and felt I learnt very little! Mum taught me to read before I went to school, I taught myself to write and I had after school tuition which my parents paid for. I feel that many primary school teachers are poorly educated and don't have a thirst for knowledge or a love of learning. However, secondary and university was great. The teachers/lecturers loved their subjects, were better qualified and wanted to learn themselves.

started school in 1976/7
infants- I don't remember much about. I was in a remedial class for 2 years and learnt to read at 6 or 7. seemingly no one taught me to write.

middle- I disliked a lot of the time and was teased a lot. surprised teachers in final year by doing quite well in SATs as they were multi choice so my appalling handwriting wasn't an issue.
senior- I quite liked mostly. finally a school that took my learning difficulties seriously and did something to help me learn coping stratagems.

6th form- I enjoyed a lot. didn't do much work.

Then I got a job.
Then I went back to college , disliked first year of classroom stuff, enjoyed the more "work" focused 2nd year.

I hated my school days with a total utter passion. I loved learning, but I hated the kids and being put down by teachers and bullying. School always seemed to be about what you could not do.

The only thing that mattered was exam results. The mental wellbeing of the children was irrelevent. Infact I did get excellent results at school, but my results were never good enough for my parents.

My son adores school and I am pleased for him. He goes to a middle of the league tables state primary and it has great pastoral care as well as a great education.
