which school jacket to buy for DS?

I cannot make my mind about a jacket for my DS. He has a winter jacket but nothing for autumn. I thought that a waterproof and breathable school jacket would be just perfect. He is starting foundation next month.

  1. This one looks nice, good price, has a hood but not breathable
www.simplyschoolwear.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=114_54_62&products_id=507
  1. This one is showerproof and breathable but no hood

  1. This one is waterproof with hood and reversible, looks good

  1. There is also a nice (waterproof, breathable, hood) The Exmoor Jacket from Blue Max but I think this one is more for colder days, winter

I think a hood is a good thing to have in case it rains but then those jackets are not breathable. I am just afraid that if they not then my DS would sweat a lot in it.

Which jackets do you buy?

You might find that the school have a school jacket with the school badge on, avaible to order through the school in September. Our school does. Its lightly padded, wind/waterproof and only costs around £20

Otherwise my advice is get one with a hood which is sewn onto the coat. Avoid zipped or studded hoods. Children tend to play lots of games involving pulling each other around by the hood at this age.

I was thinking of buying him that breathable jacket without a hood and this hat - Scandinavian Kids Souwesters. www.waterproofworld.co.uk/kibajackets.htm It is better than carrying an umbrella.
The school does not sell the jackets. I have seen similar jackets to the above at yourschooluniform www.yourschooluniform.com/catalog/category/GC14/School_Coats.html and the jackets are a few pounds overpriced.

I tend to get mine a 3in1 coat like This Regatta one They last all year whatever the weather throws at them.

Last year they lasted right through the bad winter. Bearing in mind that they walk 2 1/2 miles each way, the held up against all the elements.

Octavia09 · 22/08/2010 09:46

I like the Regatta one but we have a winter jacket already and for the autumn/spring jacket we can spend no more than £20.00. I hope to find something.

Octavia What about thisRegatta coat without the fleece

Octavia09 · 23/08/2010 09:43

Thanks ladies. I like Regatta 3 in 1. If I do not find anything else I will consider buying a Regatta jacket without fleece. I just wonder how thin that jacket without fleece is? Is it as thin as cagoule? We bought one from Tesco for £5.00 and it is made from a very thin material, just for summer. Also the hood is ridiculous. It covers just half of the head.

Another question about Regatta jackets, do the cover the bottom? Sorry too many questions. I wish I could just go into a shop in my town and check them but there are no distributors.

Amazon has good prices at the moment but the sizes are big, so and Regattaoutlet although there are some small sizes for girls.

Nothing for boys but there are three jackets for girls. One of them says, wild orchid/boys. So is it for both girls and boys? www.regattaoutlet.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product2_16551_-1__132756_13555_

Have a look here. They have a fantastic range. The Regatta reversible one looks perfect. It is fleece lined, waterproof and covers the bum Grin Perfect

So perfect I might buy my DS one myself.

Octavia09 · 23/08/2010 10:21

I have seen them (thanks!) but look Regatta outlet has a better bargain.

What do you thin of these two:

Is the 1st one as good as the 2nd one. VoldemortsNipple, you might know as you have been buying Regatta already.

For those prices, I would go for the 3in1. In my experience, the outer coat in 3in1 jackets have been sturdy enough to wear by themselves. You also have the benefit of wearing the fleece by itself on dry days.

Octavia09 · 23/08/2010 14:14

Thanks VoldemortsNipple! 3 in 1 looks/sounds good indeed.

Ds1 (age 7) has the 3 in 1 regatta and ds2 currently has the Regatta Reversible (he is 4 and about to start reception)

The 3 in 1 is great if it is warmer and pours with rain, very sturdy, well made and paired with waterproof trousers has kept ds1 dry walking to school in torrential rain.

Ds2 had the reversible one from age 3 and it does cover his bottom, just. But if it is warm you can't detach the fleece, also if they take it off and the sleeves get turned the wrong way, teachers tend to help them back into the coat with the fleece the right side out.

If you walk to school, then also look at waterproof trousers that have a zip at the bottom of the leg meaning you can tuck their school trouser into the wellie then put the waterproof trousers over the top. I have had both togz (expensive) but good for ds2 and Peter Storm ones.

VoldemortsNipple · 25/08/2010 07:45

Fizzy Do the waterproof bottoms make swishy noise when your DSs walk?

My DS has Regatta ski pants for the winter which he wears going to school. They are essential because his uniform has shorts all year. He will only wear them if I force him the weather is really bad, because they make a swishing noise as he walks. He could really do with lightweight ones for when its raining.

seeker · 25/08/2010 09:03

Wellies and a change of bottoms for when you get to school is better than waterproof trousers, honestly.

VoldemortsNipple · 25/08/2010 09:22

Seeker, we have a two and a half mile walk each way, so waterproofs are better than the likes of jogging bottoms which end up sticking to him and agrivating his excema, otherwise I'd agree.

Waterproofs are fine, its just that DS moans about the swishy noise they make and ends up walking down the road with his legs apart like he has shit himself. I just wondered if there were any on the market that didn't make the noise. Smile

Octavia09 · 25/08/2010 09:39

My DS has waterproof trousers from Tchibo. They have fleece and taffeta lining and do not make any noise. They were like http://www.tchibo.eu/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/eu/-/GBP/TdEuDisplayProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=M21684 but costed £7 or £8.00 only (a few years ago). They are very good for winter. Unfortunately, Tchibo has only online delivery to the UK home addresses and the delivery price is ridiculously high.
