Iron on is better.

Or write on the size label and check regularly (for fading in wash) then re-write.

But if you must sew in, why are you making a mess??? Just sew label in at the neckline or waist.

Tried all this sewing marlarky last year and never again - can't sew to save myself and also found myself making a bit of a mess!

Found it so much easier to get a permanent fabric marker and write name on garment labels and/or hems (also splashed out on a permanent stamp with ds name on it).

Just stamped/marked 3 pairs trouser, 5 polo shirts, 3 sweatshirts, 1 pair of plimsoles, 1 pair of shoes and it took less than 5 minutes!

Only things I buy/use are

  • fabric stamp
  • permanent pens (one black and one silver for black things IYSWIM)

these name for me clothes, shoes, packed lunch boxes, pencil cases, school bags the lot.

Sewing in labels is not hard. I tend not to use iron-on tags because I have found they fall out. But you could just buy a laundry marker and use that (remembering to re-mark clothes as the writing fades).
As Clary says you stitch them into a seam (e.g. the neckline or waist) where the fabric is thicker.
Fold the raw edge of the nametape under and then make a few small stitches at either end. You can sew all the way around (little stitches with one end of the stitch on the tag, the other on the fabric of the jacket or whatever) but if your child is at an age where they'll be out of the uniform in a year or two this probably isn't worth the effort.

Loving that stamp thing. My, times have changed since I had to spend my evenings sewing on squillions of nametapes before going off to boarding school!

Iron on woven name labels from easy2name are fab - they do not fall off in the wash and easy to iron on - but beware not all iron on lables are the same. The first set I bought from another supplier and I eventually got my money back from them as every single one came off in the wash without fail. Also use laundry marker for some stuff too - socks and the like I just put initials on. I use shoe labels in shoes (obviously!) and dishwasher proof stick on labels for other stuff - and they really are dishwasher proof. I do not do sewing!

I also have had good success with easy2name iron on labels

but increasingly I'm going for the permanent pen on the label, much faster!

jobhuntersrus · 15/08/2010 20:50

I use permanent marker pen, infact the one dh used to write things on cds. It lasts and lasts and haven't had problems with it fading or washing out apart from when I put their lunch boxes and drink bottles through the dishwasher. Mostly I wash them by hand anyway and then put them through dishwasher at end of the week for a deep clean, just means checking and going over it where necessary.

Clary · 15/08/2010 20:51

The iron on ones I like are from easy2name, they are a reversible thing so do not come off.

Only any use on white stuff tho eg polo shirts.

They really don't come off so several of DS2's polo shirts say his brother's name on! Grin

tribpot · 15/08/2010 20:53

Marker pen. Reusable for so many purposes!

DreamTeamGirl · 15/08/2010 22:08

Oooh lindax I might marry you

I have just ordered the no sew pack here

LarsA · 16/08/2010 18:00

If you are worried about iron-ons falling off, you might want to look at My Nametags labels - they are guaranteed for 10 years.

claudine9 · 17/08/2010 22:24

Have you tried Clip on labels from Nametag-it - they are even easier and quicker than iron ons and they don't ever fall off. And they get sent out in 24 hours. I ordered Thursday pm and they were here Friday
