If you sewed all your PFB's name labels in, did you resew handmedowns for sibling?

Question mainly relates to school jumper/polo shirt sort of stuff.

DS's outgrown uniform has his name neatly sewn into all items (PFB).

DD is going to wear some of it. Do you cut the labels showing the eldest's name out and put the younger one's name in it? I have been thinking of crossing out DS's first name in laundry pen and putting DD's name in pen, leaving the sewn label showing the surname. What do people do?

Excellent idea. As long as you can see the surname and the first name, it really doesn't matter whether one is sewn in and one is written in!!

oneofsuesylvesterscheerios · 14/08/2010 20:38

have been thinking about this too. I over-ordered dd1's name tags when she started school and we have about 1 trillion labels with her name on Hmm

I thought I would just cut dd1's first name out and write dd2's initial on it.

[why did I buy sew-in labels?! what a dickhead]

greentriangle · 14/08/2010 20:44

I will see how the space is for writing.

I wouldn't mind sewing DD's name in by the side of DS's label, I just don't fancy unpicking all DS's labels.

We have a weird unusual surname so this thread makes me think I'll just get labels with our surname only - it would be incredibly unlikely for there to be another child with the same surname in DD's/any future child's class!

eandh · 14/08/2010 21:03

friend told me about how she orders her labels and have copied so I order

E Surname H

So dd1 has E surname and then the H bit folded over

DD2 will have Surname H and the E bit folded over

Hope that makes sense!!!!

When DS1 started school I sewed woven name tapes into all of his clothes.

When DS2 started school I was very good and unpicked the name tapes from DS1's clothes and sewed in new ones.

However by the time DD was in school too I was getting a little bit slack... DS2 had several items of clothing which still had DS1's nametape in, they are in the same school so I figured that as long as they came home to the right house it was OK!

This summer I have given up altogether and replaced with iron on name tapes.

So I personally think your crossing first names out idea is genius!

Hassled · 14/08/2010 21:04

You need to Plan Ahead - just use the surname when you order your nametags. It helps if you have an unusual surname - but it solves the problem of the younger sibling feeling unloved.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 14/08/2010 21:05

Am thinking of just getting surname labels. DS is younger than DD, so could share school shirts (polo shirts). Guess will work as unusual surname, but wouldn't if 'Smith' or 'Jones'

greentriangle · 14/08/2010 21:16

our surname is really common Grin

No I just write ds2 name in pen over ds1 lovely embroidery name ha ha - I do many things to ensure they dont feel unloved compared to PFB but really cant be arsed with the redoing name labels!

NoahAndTheWhale · 14/08/2010 21:22

I am thinking about this - DD starts school
in September and there is s small amount of uniform that can be reused from DS (have moved house and school and he seems to have destroyed polo shirts and put his knees through trousers. Besides DD is a pinafore girl).

Have got her new labels and have also started using taggits so no sewing. Except the PE kit must have been at the beginning of DS's school career as lovingly sewn in. Will unpick though...

NoahAndTheWhale · 14/08/2010 21:24

DD would comment on having clothes with DS's name on. Although am sure we are only family with our surname in thd school so really wouldn't matter.

invisibleink · 14/08/2010 21:41

AH! I ordered (back in the day, now I just write them in!) SURNAME FAMILY as it got around the 'need' of the website to have two names. Done!

pooka · 14/08/2010 21:42

With dd I lovingly sewed labels in.

With ds1, I've bought a laundry pen, though have been known to use biro. Much easier.

beegood · 14/08/2010 22:14

I have 5 children they went to small schools but always ordered Surname Surname cut them in half 2 for the price of one. Never had a problem

serenity · 14/08/2010 22:22

I generally do surname only (unique surname) but DD and DS2 have been known to wear school clothes with the wrong first name in. As long as it makes its way back to one of them it doesn't matter which one gets it back!

Mspontipine · 15/08/2010 01:29

If my mum had done that with my elder sister's clothes before handing them down to me I would be still bringing it up to this very day. Unpick DS's name tapes (you can reuse these) and order your poor DD some of her own :)

greentriangle · 15/08/2010 09:36

Mspontipine

What if I unpick the jumpers and the polos and sew DD's name into them. But leave DS's name in the socks? 10 pairs of outgrown grey socks = 20 name labels already sewn in. Do you think that is OK?

OP posts:
MmeRedWhiteandBlueberry · 15/08/2010 09:39

I only sew labels once into each garment - no unpicking.

The last lot of labels I bought were just our surname - no decisions to make.

onimolap · 15/08/2010 09:42

It's ok. Orcat least it is for as long as the DCs are still at the same school: lost items will be returned to the named child. If the elder has moved on, there's still a fighting chance they'll get back to you, but new staff etc will never have heard of PFB and will sling into general lost property as unknown and then it will vanish.

SweetnessAndShite · 15/08/2010 09:45

greentriangle You sew name tags into SOCKS?!!!! My God, that IS dedication! .... (or daftness - can't decide which!!)

greentriangle · 15/08/2010 09:46

SweetnessAndShite - A MUMSNETTER told me to do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OP posts:
CardyMow · 15/08/2010 09:48

Nooooooooo! I don't sew nametapes in anyway, I just use a sharpie on the label, so I just scribble out one name, and re-write the other!! . It's enough trouble sewing the ruddy school badge on the blazer without worrying about nametapes!

trumpton · 15/08/2010 09:50

WE ordered " initial surname inital"
so first child got "initial surname" , 2nd child got "surname initial" and 3rd got "surname" . But never bothered to change any labels that were already sewn in
Mind you Sharpies indelible marker was my best friend. Also writes on soles of socks.

gorionine · 15/08/2010 09:51

We have an unusual foreign name and that is all I put on labels.
