Asda, tesco, M&S.....?
dd1 is starting school in september and I am a uniforms novice. I don't mind paying a bit more for things that won't fall apart in the wash, but don't want to spend a fortune either....recommendations please Smile

I found Asda jumpers very robust for DS, I bought him 5 from there and they were all in near perfect condition by the end of the year. I usually buy the polo shirts and sweatshirts from Next and they are ok.

M and S for trousers....they have lasted and washed well.

ElizabethWakefield · 14/08/2010 15:10

I think M&S are the best, I find things from there wash and last better than anywhere else.

I have tried asda, tesco, next, mothercare and debenhams.

Primark also do pretty good polo shirts, 2 for £2 and the always come up really well in the wash.

scurryfunge · 14/08/2010 15:27

I have just ordered BHS shirts as M and S were out of stock on those......anyone got BHS uniform experience?

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 14/08/2010 15:32

I love the Sainsbury's uniform range. Lasts well, and the cut is good for my tall and slim DC.

CatIsSleepy · 14/08/2010 15:42

aaah....sainsbo's may not be so good for my shortish and stocky dd Grin

John Lewis every time bought school shirts in the second hand shop (originally JL) before DD started reception. She wore them all year getting too small towards the end. Then sold them on again for the same price I bought them for in the school second hand shop (£11 for 5).
Again Tried various other tights only john lewis keep their elastic all year with PE everyday and on wednesday a change for PE in the morning and then another change at lunch time for ballet.

I second Sainsbury's and they have adjustable waists. Ours looked as good as new after a years wear. Really good value.

Oldjolyon · 14/08/2010 18:52

I mostly use M&S / Next, Debenhams and Mothercare.

I did have some Tesco Polo shirts. They were rubbish and have long since gone.

I have mothercare skirts for DD, as they are the only place that do skirts skinny enough to fit her. However, I have not been overly impressed with the quality - the hem has gone several times, but it has maintained its shape.

The clothes that have been the best quality for me, have been from Debenhams, M&S and Next. I have just put DD1s pinafore dresses away, as after two year's worth of use, she has finally outgrown them - but they are still in perfectly good nick and I will keep them for DD2. None of the cheaper clothes I bought for DD1 (Tesco / Asda) have survived. Therefore, for me it is false economy to buy them - I want uniform that will survive both my girls Grin.

Sorry, but I do think you get what you pay for.

That's good to know herbietea. Asda are good for mid term top ups or replacements.

niftyfifty · 14/08/2010 19:54

I've also bought BHS trousers for DS ever since he started school (now going into Year 9!!) and they have been excellent. As herbietea says, they're usually still good enough to pass on.

Used to get shirts there too, but I've bought ASDA ones on the last two occasions and they've lasted just as well. Cotton shirts that is, not polo shirts.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 14/08/2010 19:57

I have found that M&S trousers - not the value ones, the more expensive ones with the zip on the pocket are very good.
However, their polo shirts are crap.

John Lewis shirts are good.

Have to admit to buying the cheapest polo shirts since my dcs have to wear white ones, which you can guarantee will have a paint stain on them within weeks and it will of course not come out even in a boil wash.

Having had to boil most white polo shirts in my time Asda ones appear to keep their shape best after.

wubblybubbly · 15/08/2010 13:28

Of the M&S polo shirts I bought, some have washed great and kept their shape, others have gone sort of short and square Confused They were all bought at the same time, same price etc.

Also bought M&S trousers, from the cheap range admittedly, they're okay but have gone a little bobbly after a few months. Their cotton jumpers though have washed well, no bobbling at all, kept their shape too.

Bought Asda sweatshirt things, they've been great, no signs of wear at all.

Giddyup · 16/08/2010 10:40

M&S non iron shirts are brilliant, if you need 'proper' shirts.
