my ds has just finished recetion, and has done well with reading and writing. I had planned to get him to do a bit of both each day over summer holidays, however he is not keen so i have decided to let him do a bit as and when he pleases for fear of putting him off. Deep down though i am worried he will forget what he was taught in reception and will have fallen behind when he starts year 1. What do you think?

i think he'll be fine. you can encourage reading in other places too though, not just books.
this afternoon ds1 and I were reading toy packaging in boots!

Most children do tend to loose a bit in the summer but they soon pick it up again, go have fun with your son, go and enjoy the summer give him life experences he will be back to it soon so I would not worry.

DD is making a scrapbook of her holidays. Just stuff like pressed flowers, tram tickets, photos, drawings. She is writing a little bit on each page, not sure if it's enough to keep her hand in, but she wants to do it, so that's fine by me :)

Ask if he wants to help you write a list for a visit to the shops/supermarket, an invitation for a friend to come to play , a message to granny about his day out but don't worry if he doesn't want to he's only 5!

I would concentrate on the reading - shop signs, number plates, cereal boxes etc. Most littlies dont want to sit and write at this age, especially until they can do it will.

Maybe get some postcards he can write to relatives but other than that let him have a break - they work much harder in year 1!
