My ds is going to be starting reception this September and I want to find a lunchbox for him. Can anyone recommend a sturdy/practical and funky lunchbox for him please?

Sorry for terrible grammar! It should say that he is starting reception this September.

i would let him choose his own - more likely to bring it home again!! Make sure it is clearly labelled. I get a zipped, insulated one. Easy to clean and shops have plenty to choose from - tesco, wilkinsons, brantano, Next, toys r us etc

This might seem expensive but they last for ages. I found the soft ones smelled after a while as I could never get the food out of the seams. They also tore and fresh food or frubes got squashed in them sometimes.

There are some beautiful tin ones here but they all look a bit small.

i wouldn't get a tin one- you need to get one made from an insulating material to keep the lunch cool rather than metal!!

The zipped soft insulated ones are perfect. I always put them in the washing machine and they cleaned up really well.

I haven't found a lunchbox yet that lasts a full academic year, or even close.

The last one I bought was a concentrate one, like the link above, but after a few months use the plastic has now warped slightly making the seal on the main case not airtight anymore and one of the little tubs has split.

I have just ordered a laptop lunch bento set (without the carry-case as my son wanted a star wars case) from Amazon. With the case it is £25.99 and without £18.99 (the star wars case was £9.80) - so it is definately not a cheap option. If it last a full academic year and beyond it will be better value though. I cannot say yet though! If this is no good then I am definately going back to cheap and replace often.

Definately let your child have some kind of choice though.

definitely

we just use old-fashioned plastic lunchbox, like this.
DS1 has just finished yr2, so 3 years in school and 2 terms of having lunch once a week at pre-school before that.
His 1st box was similar to that link, but £1 from a local discount shop. It broke on the hinge eventually, after about 2.5 years.
His 2nd box is the one in that link I think.

I use a plastic box inside to contain his sandwiches (small ice-cream tub), then he has other bits loose in the lunchbox, and also a drink bottle.

I also freeze yoghurts and put them in straight from the freezer, they are defrosted by lunchtime but still cool.

DS2 is starting in Sep, he currently has a Fimbles box similar to the link which was 50p from a car boot - in excellent condition. Not sure how long he will be happy with Fimbles though!
