targets for end of year one

A friend was told by our dss' reception teacher that they make projections for where they expect the child to be at by end of year 1. Does anyone know what this is based on? Just wondered if it is based on EYFS, would the teacher in year 1 feel the need to focus more on the high scorers to ensure they reach higher projections.

Yes, the teacher would have to focus on the high scorers to ensure they reach higher projections, and on the lower scorers to make sure they achieve their projections, oh and on the middle children to make sure they achieve their projections too! All children are expected to make the same amount of progress wherever they start from, so you need to work just as hard to get a child from say a 1C to a 1A as you would from a 1A to a 2B

Teachers set targets each year for the amount of progress the children in their class should make during that year.

I wouldn't focus any more on one group that another, it is important that they all progress. It can actually be more difficult for less able children to make the expected rate of progress that for more able children to achieve higher projections. Teachers track progress throughout the year and only tend to worry/vary strategies when children are notably underachieving.

Remember, projections are not meant to be limiting. All children should be challenged in class and it is important that teachers have high expectations of them.
However, children are not little robots and some years will make more than expected progress, some years less. This is normal.

Are you worried about something regarding your child?

Basically my ds has done well with reading this year. He has been on book band 6 for a while now and his written report said he is reading confidently with good comprehension and expression. He got a 7 on the EYFS which I know is fine, but it is the same score as his friend who has just gone onto book band 3, doesn't know all his sounds and is still struggling to blend words. The comments my ds got on his report were identical to another boy who go a 9 on the EYFS who is on book band 4. So will my sons targets be the same as the other boy who got a 7? I know i shouldn't worry because he is doing well, but i do feel confused and a bit worried he won't be given an appropriate target. Can someone reassure me please.

This seems like another example of the EYFS being unreliable. I don't know if targets are set on EYFS alone but i would hope not. Interested to see some teachers replies. I can understand your concerns.

I wonder what happened there...

molk book bands wouldn't influence the profile scores and it's quite possible to score 7 in the reading aspect without actually being able to read more than a few words.
I would expect to see a difference in the Linking Sounds to Letters aspect between your child and his friend

spongecustard · 25/07/2010 11:58

so would their targets for end of year one be different and not based on eyfs alone?

mrz · 25/07/2010 12:54

I would expect the profile to "inform" targets but not for targets to be EYFS targets. By that I mean if the profile shows any areas where a child is clearly having difficulty or I would expect this to be reflected in the targets or if the child is excelling in any areas I would expect targets to stretch
