My DD is in Y 5. I was told by her teacher that she will be moved down a group in Maths for next year (currently in top group) as although she has made progress there is a child in the middle group who has made more progress. I was then surprised (but pleased) when on her report she received a 4a for maths and and a 1 for both effort and achievement (1=excellent, 2=good, 3=satisfactory 4=poor). Does this seems strange? Would that mean that the other 34 children in this group would have also got a 1 for achievement?

I guess the other child might also have got 1s for both, and have just slipped a notch ahead of your DD. But ask the teacher.

Thank you for your response. I guess you are right about the other child but does that mean that the remainder of the group also got the same score as they are staying in the group? I would have expected DD to have got 2's or 3's to be consistent with moving down.

Might be better for her to be top of the middle group then bottom of the top group?

Every child responds differently...

It is certainly possible for 34 other children to also have 1 for achievement. And while a 4a is good in Y5 - it's not exceptionally good.

DD and DS both got level 5s in maths at the end of Year 5, maybe others in this group did too?
