Can anyone help me understand DS report please?

I have googled, but think I'm just confusing myself! I've just had DS school report home and for maths he has been given a 2c. However, on the chart to the right, there isn't a 2c on there, so I can't make out quite how well he's doing.

It says Year 2 targets are 2A/2B, but then Year 3 jumps to 3C/2A. Does this mean that he's in between yr 2 & yr 3?

I'm not a pushy mum by the way, but DS is doing really well in maths (no idea where he gets it from!) and I'd like to praise him and tell him how good he's doing in a way that he will understand!

Thank you

A

I googled 2c & sats and got this, from a school website:

"The National Curriculum has eight levels. Children are expected to work their way through one level every two years. At the end of Year 2 children are expected to achieve level 2. At the end of Year 6, children are expected to achieve level 4. Levels are sub-divided. For example Level 2 can be, either 2a (slightly above average) 2b (average) or 2c (slightly below average.) If a child has achieved the expected level it means that they show knowledge and skills that are the same as or slightly better than most children of the same age nationally. The results show whether or not your child has reached the expected National Curriculum levels for their year group."

2C comes below a 2B, which is followed by a 2A before moving into the threes. The "average" score at the end of yr 2 is a 2B so a 2C is a little below this, a 2A ia a little above. Most schools have a "spread" of average scores, simply because children vary so much and levels aren't exactly an exact science!

I think it goes c, b, a rather than a, b, c through each level.

So 3c, 3b, then 3a, then 4c, 4b and 4a. IYSWIM.

How old is he ? 2c is lower than a 2a so within the target of Year 2 but good for a Year 1 say. Frankly I wouldn't bother to even tell him the grade, just be positive and encouraging

Thanks very much everyone, that makes much more sense than the info I found

LIZS, he's 6 and just about to finish Year 1. I had no intention of telling him the grade, but we've just found out that he's going up to the Year 3 class along with a handful of others (although will still be a Year 2) and is a bit anxious about it, so I just wanted to let him know that he will be ok, in a "there you go, your maths is as good as "
