11 plus practice papers - advice please

Hi there, my son did a practise paper at school and got 114!
What is it out of and what would be a pass.
In my day [now that makes me sound old!], things were always worked out in percentage - so much easier to understand and know if you doing well/on the right track.
Also, does any one know if the real test for Maths is multiple choice or not.
Thanks

I've never tried to work this raw score, standardised score business out, so someone else will probably be able to help on that. As for the maths, it depends what area of the country you are in. Some areas do multiple choice and others do standard format. What area are you in? I may be able to find out based on your area.

Whether your real papers are multiple choice or not depends on your area. Not sure where you are but in Kent 11+ papers are out of 140 (standardised score). A pass is 120 out of 140. Kent papers are all multiple choice.

The pass of 120 equates to roughly 50-60% of the paper right. A 140 score is between 75-85%, depending on the difficulty of the paper and the ability of the pupils sitting the test.

Hiclaig
thanks for that, we live in Kent.
Thanks for your help.

Kent is multiple choice (as is Medway). Kent has got the most grammar schools in the country, so great place to be .
If you don't already know about it, use the forum on the website elevenplusexams.co.uk, lots of very knowledgeable people on there and they have a Kent section, where Kent parents swop advice.

in west kent you pass with an aggregrate of 360 (but have to have 120 in each paper) depending where you are in Kent you will need different scores. You need to aim to be getting around 85%. The schools here in west kent all require particular scores. The Judd (boys)and Tonbridge Grammar (girls) want the highest scores then Tunbridge Wells girls and Skinners (boys) after that it is Weald of Kent (girls) and Tunbridge Wells boys who don't ask for particular scores as far as I remember you just have to pass.

Claig are you sure Kent as opposed to Medway is multiple choice? It certainly wasn't when ds1 was doing it 6 years ago.

good point eatyourveg. I checked on the elevenplusexams site, but I'll have another look.

according to the parents on the forum, Kent Test is multiple choice, or at least it was in 2007. Don't know if they have changed the format since.

Kent Test is multiple choice. Medway is a different LEA and they have a separate test to Kent.

West Kent grammars has 3 super-selectives, which select purely on score. These are Judd (initial cut off this year 415); Skinners (initial cut off 410); and Tonbridge Grammar (out of area 407; in area 404 I believe).

Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Girls is not a super-selective - they take any girls with a score over 360, but with a catchment area of around 1.6 miles you need to live within Tunbridge Wells.

Likewise Weald of Kent and Tunbridge Wells Boys Grammar take any score over 360 but again take preference for in county applicants.

DS sat Kent test last September and the format has not changed since then.

As I said in my earlier post, raw scores for a 140 score (or full points) are between 75-85% but it is not necessary to score this highly if you are not looking for a super-selective. For a straight forward 360 pass you should be looking to achieve around 60-70% in practice tests to allow for some drop off under exam conditions.

well ds1 was 2004. They changed the timings from the original November when it coincided with many independent schools entrance exams to January and about 2 years ago (I think) it all got changed to september. Must have changed format with all the upheavals somewhere along the line.
