unprofessional report?

Have you ever received a report that was full of spelling mistakes, typos, missed words, wrong words, wrong and missing punctuation and lots of 'his' instead of 'her?' And i don't mean the odd one here and there, I mean littered with it? For example, each paragraph beginning with what your child has 'studded' for the year and then numerous examples of the above throughout?

If so, did you do anything about it?

If not, would you do anything about it?

I would correct it and send it back.

sushistar · 15/07/2010 18:09

that's just not on. I'm a college teacher and would be horrified if a collegue did that. (Please don't judge me by my mumsnet spelling / typos - work's different!!)

I'd complain to the teacher, and maybe cc the head.

mummytime · 15/07/2010 18:16

I would be shocked, most reports I know of are proof read by at least one colleague.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 15/07/2010 18:18

blimey. I would be tempted to say something. are you going to, OP?

nagoo · 15/07/2010 18:18

I would complain.

BetsyBoop · 15/07/2010 18:20

I wouldn't do anything if it was a couple of typos (yes they shouldn't be there, but none of us are perfect) but it sounds like much more than this. For example if they are mixing up his & her does all of the report refer to you DC, or was some of supposed to be on the report of someone else's DC? I would write a letter to the teacher (& copy to the head) asking for clarification on this point & mention the numerous other errors in the report too.

catflap · 15/07/2010 18:33

It is in every paragraph - apparently my daughter has 'leant' about leavers and pulleys and can describe things as flexible and ridged. That's when you can read past the lack of full stops, commas, capital letters and missed words... it just goes ON AND ON!

Was so tempted to mark/highlight it and send it back.

There is no comments form.

I really HAVE to say something - directly to the teacher? or bypass and go to the Head??

I would probably go to the Head, because if the teacher is this bad they need help.

TheFallenMadonna · 15/07/2010 18:47

Is there no comment from the Head on the report? My DC's reports have comments from the Head, and in my (secondary) school, I read the report of every one of my tutor group and add a comment, and then a senior teacher reads them and also adds one. I can understnad typos - I make them, especially, on report number 81, but there are mistakes and mistakes...

Bloody hellfire. I'm afraid my pedantry would take me by the hand and rouse the rabble to insist on the teacher's dismissal. That's appalling.

EvilTwins · 15/07/2010 19:10

That's shocking. Our reports are proof-read by at least 2 people. The other teacher in my department has had two returned today for missing commas.

Speak to the head.

minimathsmouse · 15/07/2010 21:46

I wouldn't bother with taking it to the head. Did you see the Panarama report, 18 bad teachers sacked in 40 years! The report seemed to suggest that bad teachers are seldom dealt with and when they are, they are simply passed to another school.
I would copy it and send one to the LEA, give my MP a copy and if I was feeling really naughty I might even send it to the local press! Might also be worth sending one to Gove, give him something to think about.

Chaotica · 15/07/2010 21:50

Send it to the head, the governers and follow up as minimathsmouse says.

I am just contemplating whether I really should send my dd to a school whose new welcome webpage reads "Headteachers welcome" (well, clearly they are as the current one obviously can't punctuate!).

Dumbledoresgirl · 15/07/2010 21:54

IME (as a teacher and as a parent) primary school reports are all read and checked for errors by the head. So if the report has reached you, it has done so via the head. Go to the head. And give full rein to your horror and indignation. I would.
