Hello im new here but looking for some advice please, today i have recieved my sons report and sats results, he is in year 2 at the moment and has only acheived a level 1 for writing, im really upset about this i have been into his school a couple of times as we really struggle to get him to concentrate on his homework sentances all they will say is that he is a reluctant writer, he has got a 2a for reading a 2c for maths and a 2 for science, i always expected his maths to be low as he always struggles, with this, his report says he lacks concentration and usually fails to complete his work in the time limit set, im really cross that this has never been mentioned at any parents eve, i have bought up lack of concentration myself and been told its a boy thing, im worried now he has a problem thats not being focused on.
thanks for any advice.

Do you have the opportunity to meet with his teacher? I would start by asking what support the school is putting in place for your son in year 3. He should be given booster sessions to help him to make the necessary progress.

He is still very young and his writing will more than likely catch up to his reading in time.

Hello there thank you for the reply, his class two teacher left on sick leave friday for the rest of term, im toying with the idea of speaking to the teacher that he will be having in yr 3 to see what she can offer.

Does your son have an IEP, or is he on the SEN register as a nature of concern?

strumpetmay · 14/07/2010 21:19

Hi Goblinchild, no i have never been told that he has a IEP and i know hes not on the sen register, i had queried dyslexia with them in year one but was told he reads too well for dyslexia, im probably trying to make excuses for him.

I have a child on exactly the same levels in my class. He's very good at talking, but has poor handwriting, is young in the year, and has little interest in writing.

He is, however, very very interested in (and informed about) nature, animals and dinosaurs. Over the hols, his dad is going to take him out on investigation trips, and they're going to make a journal full of photos, captions and artefacts. They're going to make sure all the written sentences make sense, and that all words are included (even the little insignificant ones, like in and is!!). The child has had a talk with me, the teacher, and mum and dad and has signed an agreement to do this over the holiday (plus two number lines a day).

We hope this will help!!

RollaCaster, what is a number line ??

My child not doing too well in year 2.

I am dreading her report and sats result coming today as know she will be upset

strumpet, my dd was exactly the same at the end of yr 2 - good reading (no SATS here, but teacher assessment level 3), but very poor writing (spelling CVC words only, despite working in Welsh which is a completely phonetic language).

She's come on amazingly in yr 3 - I think still behind where would be expected (have posted on unhelpful reports elsewhere!), but now writing full paragraphs even though they have to write in English as well now.

She also has poor concentration, failing to complete work in time set etc - again, still something of a problem, but she has come on a lot.

From postings on here poor writing/spelling despite good reading skills seems pretty common, so I wouldn't despair, though I would ask what they are going to do to help. With my dd they tried getting her to work on the computer (so divorcing the spelling from the mechanics of writing), writing in sand, & various other things (in her class there are a few who struggle with writing, I think they work in a small group with the TA).

MumInBeds · 15/07/2010 12:44

My ds was much the same at this age and I remember how hard I found it to deal with.

My DS is coming to the end of Y6 now and is above average or well above average in everything except his handwriting (the content is above average but not the forming of the letters) but we now know he is dyspraxic so please take heart from this.

Don't let your son see any disappointment in you or he'll start labelling himself negatively. Keep talk to him, if he shows interest in something then work with him to investigate it, whatever it is. Try to keep things exciting and fun and follow his lead. The most important thing is to try to maintain and build an interest in learning.

hi strumpetmay, my dd also in year 2 hasn't had her results/report yet, but I know through conversations with her teacher that she's only working at level 1 - pretty much across the board. dh and I try to help her but she still struggles, plus we both work so limited time. Her teacher said to get a tutor now would be too much for her. I'm concerned about her struggling even more in year 3! Her writing is still often illegible. She has an IEP though and is on SA. RollaCoasta's idea is fab, we might do something like this for dd over the summer. A lot of young boys don't like writing so it may well be that your ds will catch up in time. Probably worth raising it with his year 3 teacher though, and asking what extra help they can give him.

throckenholt · 15/07/2010 14:25

reading, maths and science he seems about where you would expect, so it looks like it is just a problem with writing.

Can you work out if it is physical writing, or what to write that is the problem.

They should have flagged this area as something to work on and he ought to get "school action" next term - which may mean working on a small group with a TA to build skills in that area. Would be worth asking the teacher what sort of thing they will be doing to help him improve his writing.
