levels at end of yr 1

Sorry I know this has been done loads already.. Dc has been told she is a level 1b although her teacher said there is no need for concern and everything is ok,

The only info I can find says that at the end of yr1 they should be a 1a,
Is there a big difference between 1b and 1a?

its confusing isnt it? ( or maybe thats just me!)

Thanks in advance

kids go in spurts in education

the average of 2 levels a year is rubbish in my view - they spurt and plateau

reikizen · 14/07/2010 20:27

There is no 'should be' as far as I am aware. I'd speak to the teacher if you have any specific concerns otherwise assume that everything is actually ok!! Children develop at such different rates and personally I think you know if your child is struggling or not at school Remember, if we were in Norway they wouldn't even be at school til they were 7! And they have far better literacy and numeracy rates than us. Playing, that's what they should be doing at the end of Year 1, and there are no official grades for that.

IndigoBell · 14/07/2010 21:53

My school said 1B is the average for end of Y1.

But there was a previous thread on this and apparantly it is up to the school to say whether they expect kids to make 2 sub levels or 3 sublevels in Year 2, ie some schools want kids to be a 1A and some want them to be a 1B.

Eitherways, there isn't much between them. Just one book level... Honestly, don't worry.

primarymum · 14/07/2010 21:55

There's a sniff and a sneeze between them!

tikkapots · 15/07/2010 14:23

I think schools interpret the 1a, 1b & 1c differently.

In our school 1a is seen as above average and 1b average. However, reading on here a lot is said about 1a being average.

I think at 5/6 the teachers comments give the best indication of progress and areas that need work for next year?

I thought it was:-
c= doing the first third of work at the new level
b= has completed the first 2/3rds of that level
a = has mastered the whole level

so children go level 1c then onto 1b then onto 1a and then onto 2c, etc., etc

The national curriculum gives a series of tasks/ skills/ bits of knowledge for each level and then child has to work through them one at a time. When the teacher has seen them do each thing a few times, then they get a tick to say they can do it and they move on. there are several things to accomplish in each sublevel. Examples would be using capital letters and full stops or being able to count in 5s.

All this could be completely wrong - its only what I've deduced from things my DS's teacher has said to me.

mumbar · 15/07/2010 22:19

no I think 1b average going by ds report. 1B writing (in line with national expectations) maths / reading 1a (between inline with and above)

To me this derives as 1b is national expectation with 1a being slightly above but not genius!! and 2c is considered above as level 2 is expected level at the end of ks1 (yr2)

actually clare70 you could be onto something there as its done by points. Everytime a child demonstates they secure on a task they get points for it and in national curriculum point mean levels!!!!

tbh these reports are written in May so your dc may have ben 1b but has now made such improvement they are now 1a iyswim?

Ds 5.10 (yr1) has suddenly gone from struggling to write a sentence to writing 2/3 using speech marks and connectives and he got a 1b.

claire70 · 15/07/2010 22:58

According to the handout at the back of my DC's reports, 1A & 1B are the expected levels at the end of year one; 2C & 2B at end year 2; 2A & 3C at end year 3, etc

It looks like it has been taken from some sort of government literature. Don't all schools include the same attachment on the school reports?

the way i have been interpreting it, was at the end of year 1, children with a 1C aren't meeting government-set expectations. Those with 2C and above are doing well.

But what counts in the end is the A-levels and it is a bit much to extrapolate anything about likely achievement in A-levels from year one at school.

mumbar · 16/07/2010 07:39

yes and summer born children are often slightly behind in infants but somehow catch up as once the basic reading writing have been established its how much you learn and interpret a subject that counts.

mogmum · 16/07/2010 17:45

I went to see the teacher and she said everything is ok, dc is doing really well with no problems and she explained the levels/sublevels so I think i now have a better understanding.

Thank you all for your comments, they have been really helpful

can you share what she told you ? It would be good to know

mogmum · 17/07/2010 13:39

Hi mumbar I will give it a go.......

As it was explained to me, was that you start on level 1 ( although there is if I remember correctly level W but she didnt explain about that) you start off at 1c then go to 1b and 1a,
Apparantly 1a is where they would 'like' them to finish year 1 but as we all know, all children are different,
Then (and this is where it might get confusing sorry) she said at the end of year 2 they 'like' them to move 3 sub-levels ie c b and a to finish year 2 at 2a, but again, it will vary according to the childs ability etc.

This was how I understood it anyway, but again all children are different and learn at their own speed, I think I got a bit lost as dc is my first and I just wanted to make sure that I understood it and also that she was doing ok which it turns out she is.....
Sorry this turned into a massive post.

This is so confusing isn't it. We were not given levels by my dd as apparently working above for literacy. However, she is still reading 1b reading books.
