how much would you spend on a present for a teacher to say thank you, would you also buy something for the classroom assistant? any suggestions would be welcomed

I think redondan who upped it may be selling gifts for teachers on ebay

i usually do wine, chocs, scarves etc for nursery at xmas. Even No7 products on the 3 for 2! For my DD reception teacher i knew she liked baking so i bought her a cook book. I wouldnt worry about buying just for the teacher (i did) as i've heard most teachers share their gifts amongst the teaching assistants (i would hope so!). In nursery where there are 8 staff i just sent one main present (approx £10) for her key worker and then 4 wines to share. I presume others do similar so they just share the lot at the end.

and now gorn Grin

Actually I do want to get Dd's preschool teacher a gift because she's been so lovely lately and really gone above and beyond so I am scouring this thread for ideas. But I get the feeling she'd like cake and wine.

We got one of my daughter's teachers a jute bag one year. Was a bright pink job, with 'teachers are good' scrawled on the side. It looked just about the right size to stuff a class worth of homework books and emergency wine in :o

When another of her teachers left I made a tin of dark choc and walnut brownies for him, he was a self-confessed chocoholic.

In Reception my daughter gave her teacher and TA nice bath products. No response so don't know if appreciated. Last Xmas we gave Oxfam gifts instead - sponsoring teaching projects in poor countries. No response so, again, don't know if appreciated.
Teachers - do you think an 'altruistic' gift is crap? Bottle of wine next time?

gordongrumblebum · 16/05/2011 22:43

Do you think you should get a response?

Perhaps you could give 'altruistic' gifts to the school as a whole, as a thank you for the year. A bit like giving a communal box of Roses.

I personally think all teachers' presents should be bought with a pooled (voluntary) contribution, and should be 'altruistic' or of use to the school (books for the library, good felt pens, etc.)

So much money is wasted on candles and exploitative 'A1 teacher' presents.

Chocolate fridge cake (made with very clean fingers by DP) went down very well in the week before end of term. The kids made and decorated a box to put them in.

A good few of my family are teachers and I hear they are always very generous givers to the local tombolaWink.

I like the idea of a letter...DD2's teacher is very young and newly qualified and I bet it would go down well...must dust off the notelets come JulySmile.

Very obvious one - but if you're sending in a cake or something for the staffroom, it's worth sending it in a couple of days BEFORE the end of term. Otherwise you get like 5 cakes on the last day and even with my former colleagues who could demolish a cake in 15 seconds flat (5 seconds if the Y6 staff got there first) - it presents a challenge... a fun one - but still!

I'm still sulking my fave mug a kid bought me finally died (used to always get cat stuff because the kids knew I liked cats)! It was a lovely cat mug too!

I do HATE WITH A PASSION the tat products that Clinton etc sell for TA's and teachers.

We really do not want Best Teacher Awards and pen holders and mugs and badges. Sorry but it's true.

Wine is great!

bobala · 17/05/2011 18:36

as a teacher I love homemade things far more than wine/chocs. I have been teaching 20 years and have kept all the homemade cards from my children and also the lovely letters from parents. On another point -I always send a thank you letter home.
