Workbooks for the holidays

I've been looking for some workbooks for DS to do over the hols. Ordinarily I wouldn't bother, but right at the end of this term he's on a bit of a roll and I don't want to lose the momentum. His confidence is at an all time high as is his motivation (all relative though, the former was rock bottom and the latter non-existent) so I really want to try and take advantage of this.

I promise I will back off if need be

Does anyone have any recommendations? I found rather a lot of Carol Voerderman branded stuff - it seemed a bit gimmicky but if it's good then I can overcome that.

They'll need to be either printed or printable - we'll be away for a lot of the holiday with no PC.

He'll be going into Y5 in September and really needs a hand with comprehension - other stuff would be good too, though, to keep it broad.

if you're looking for maths stuff, you can get really cheap ones in shops like The Works. some of them are from US but I shouldn't think that matters too much (some terminology will be different).

this website looks quite useful for making worksheets.

for comprehension... hmm. haven't seen workbooks on that (though I've never specifically looked!) but what about a fun project instead?

you could make a book or magazine on a particular topic, as this would involve consolidating info from other sources. perhaps not very holiday-able though.

I found a whole range of them in Poundland, they are fine for practicing things that they have learnt in school.

Bonds comprehension books are worthwhile.
Maybe the 10 minute tests as well as practise papers.

Lots of the KS2 English books have comprehension in.

Thanks, everyone. I had completely forgotten about the Works. We don't have a Poundland, sadly.

The worksheet site looks promising, and I'm having a look online now for Bonds books.

Good to hear that KS2 books cover comprehension.

When we go to France we always see hundreds of holiday workbooks in the supermarket - they all look so glossy and inviting. But they're in French, which I think at this stage would be a little unfair I think!

I'm a big fan of Bond too.

Regarding the maths worksheet site, here's a DIY Kumon way to use it.

The key to avoiding burnout is to spend a short amount of time each session (say 10 mins) and do several sessions rather than sitting down for an hour. This is likely to get him asking for more work! Also varying the activities helps.

Thanks, Caroline. You know I dream of the day when DS actually asks for more work!
