End of Y1, top third of class, which level?

Just wondering what levels, on average, children in top third and bottom third of a Y1 classroom would achieve?

Second from bottom table, for example, what levels would children typically achieve at the end of year one?

I am guessing that children on the top table would typically end the year around level 1A+?

What about the second from top ability grouping, level 1B?

Just trying to get an approximate idea.

Same sort of pattern in Y2?

It would of course depend on the abilities of the class itself, but if the average child is supposed to be 2b at the end of yr 2, adn they move 2 sub-levels a year, the average child should be 1a at the end of yr 1. An above average child wodl therefore be around 2c or 2b+ at the end of year 1, and a struggler around 1c at the end of year 1.

My apologies, I meant top table 2A +.

Second from bottom table around 2B.

Our average seems to be higher than the national average? Don't think we have a particularly able class/school.

DS is at the end of Year 1 and I think he is probably a low to middle level 2 in most subjects. He is at the higher end of the class.

It doesn't really matter though - are you happy with how your child is progressing at school?

Depends on the abilities of the class / intake of the school.

In some areas it might be level 2A if not 3, and in others maybe 2B?

Yes, no real problems, thankfully. She's at an above average level in all areas.

DD has been in bottom end of class most of the year now and unfortunately there seem to be some children who distract the class heavily concentrated in the bottom third.

Our setting system, like some others I see on here, whilst not completely rigid, isn't as fluid as I'd like.

I suppose I am wondering if I could get her into another grouping/set that was more in the middle? I think she'd be able to concentrate better and make even more progress? I am wondering where other children sit at a similar level. Not that it helps really, as you've said it all depends.

Her report said she was distracted at times, and given what I've seen, I am not surprised. I suppose I worry that this may continue next year. Hopefully nothing to worry about.

You could look at KS1 national SATS results and work backwards

From memory about 25% achieve level 3 in reading but it's about 13% in writing.

of course your child's class may be wildly different.
