Skirt rolling hell!

Poplinn · 21/10/2025 21:38

My year 7 (11 year old) is rolling her skirt up just under the bum (no joke) as soon as she gets to school and has it like that when we collect her. I am absolutely appalled and disgusted that the school allow the girls to wear skirts like this and it’s become part of the school culture.

I know girls have always been rolling their skirts up , but to this level is absolutely disgusting. The school have a duty of care and by allowing the older girls to get away with it, they then influence the very young girls in year 7, who are not even teenagers!

My daughter will roll it down around us but as soon she gets to school she hitches it up again. She does this to ‘fit in’ I am appalled and enraged. I’ve sent a complaint to school but I’m still disgusted it’s even going on.

No words.

She's your daughter...

MsSmartShoes · 21/10/2025 21:40

It’s has always been so and will always be so. Grit your teeth and don’t take the bait.

She's your daughter...

Exactly. If you can’t tell her not to do it then why are you expecting the school to?

SixSeven · 21/10/2025 21:42

Our school has switched to trousers only and I fully understand why.

HappyKatieA · 21/10/2025 21:42

Buy her trousers?

Poppingby · 21/10/2025 21:42

Welcome to MN Op.

Roll your own skirt up to pick her up from school.

Bernadinetta · 21/10/2025 21:45

It was ever thus.
I’m 42 and did this. My 12 year old does this.
I assume she’s wearing tights?

Roll your own skirt up to pick her up from school.

Oh please do this!

I’d not be very impressed but it’s not a hill I’d die on. This would be a reverse psychology one for me - the more you appear to care the more stubborn she’ll probably get about it.

Roll your own skirt up to pick her up from school.

Genius

Well it sounds like she doesn’t do it when she’s with parents, she’s asking school to pull her up on it too

GagMeWithASpoon · 21/10/2025 21:51

I’m surprised you managed to find a school that DOESN’T care about skirt length.

Sporadica · 21/10/2025 21:52

I remember rolling them up because uniform skirts are typically a universally unflattering length and a few inches shorter looked better on almost everyone. It wasn't bum-bearing piecrust frill territory, though. Did you get a response from the school and do you know for sure she's wearing it rolled that high all day? I'm surprised that she doesn't think to lower it at least a bit right before you collect her to avoid consequences if the school isn't bothered but you are?

In any case, at that age she probably isn't buying her own clothes, so either get her uniform trousers (no skirts) or Bridget Jones pants or thick opaque bike shorts to wear under her skirt.

NachoCheesed · 21/10/2025 21:53

The quicker schools have culottes/trousers as uniform the better. The secondary school I worked in you could see the girls arsecheeks - forever telling them to roll skirts down.

Coconutter24 · 21/10/2025 21:56

How is this the schools fault? She is your daughter so parent her! Tell her it’s not acceptable and she’s not allowed to do it and if she does it give her consequences

Corse · 21/10/2025 22:12

No school wants their pupils rolling their skirts but imagine the uproar if a teacher looked hard enough to comment.
Our school now insists on high dernier tights to make things a bit more decent.

Walkerzoo · 21/10/2025 22:16

I think they all do it. I see kids walking to buses etc and I want to go and pull the skirt down and I am not their mum's....

VikingLady · 21/10/2025 22:25

I did it, and I was a nerd. My mum just bought me extra thick woolly opaque tights. They’re as opaque as leggings.

Otterdrunk · 21/10/2025 23:38

Everyone used to hoik their skirts up but now horrifically they’re hoiking them up so high their bum cheeks are hanging out & they’re not wearing tights either. It is truly concerning. I think schools have a duty & I commend the ones that only allow trousers or culottes.

I think you need to be very plain with her about why you don’t like it. @smashinghopeYOU sound unhinged, actually.

minipie · 22/10/2025 11:50

Mine does this but she wears little shorts underneath (Nike Pros), they all do, so it’s not obscene. I have no idea what the logic is of wearing a tiny skirt and then shorts but 🤷‍♀️

Would your DD wear these if you got some?

IMO it’s not worth an argument with the school over - save your powder for when there is a real problem.

GoldenPecker · 22/10/2025 12:08

I rolled my skirt up in the 90s. It’s not a new phenomenon. My mum told me to roll it down so I did but then rolled it up again when I got to school. The teachers told me to roll it down which I did but I then rolled it back up again when they weren’t paying attention. Your dd knows you don’t like it but keeps doing it anyway. If she won’t listen to you and respect what you say about this by not rolling up her skirt, then it’s a bit rich getting annoyed that the school are allowing it as presumably she’s being just as defiant with them. Maybe you should buy her some trousers.

mondaytosunday · 22/10/2025 12:18

And there are umpteen threads about why are schools so insistent that skirts be X length!

SoManyDandelions · 22/10/2025 12:43

Buy her a pleated skirt. These are more difficult to roll up, as they get quite bulky round the waist 😆

Also buy some nice thick tights, so there is no underwear on show.

I wore my skirt very short at school. So did my friends. We all grew up to be happy, successful women!
