Hi all.

11 year old DS has adhd, just started high school last month, but in the last few weeks has became so ‘switched off’. Almost like his brain is foggy, forgetting a lot, losing things in school, either angry/emotional or hyper/loud, there’s no inbetween with him. Nothing wrong at school, and currently not on any adhd meds. Is it too early for hormones to be kicking in or is he at the right age for this? He is my eldest so unsure how to navigate this.

TIA

Hi, is there a reason why he’s not on medication? My eldest is very much the same when he’s not medicated. He’s not too young for hormones to be kicking in either, puberty can affect their behaviour especially in adhd/neurodivergent children. It might be worth asking for an appointment to discuss medication it might be a really big help, if it doesn’t he can always come off them?

Also starting high school is a massive change especially a child with adhd, might take him a while to become familiar with the routine of things in school as it’s a lot different than primary school x

Agree with Mummy. This isn’t unusual behaviour if he’s unmedicated and no, it’s not too early for puberty, my DS shot up in height between Christmas and Easter in Y7.

Is he willing to give the medication a try?

And what regulating tactics is he doing? Does he run, exercise or do sport and does he do any guided meditation?

Hi any updates with this?

My DS13 has ADHD with ASD - clinical psychologist has mentioned medication will help.

Sorry I know this isn’t my post but my son is nearly 13 and also had adhd and asd, he’s currently on medikinet and he wouldn’t of been able to manage in school without it, it’s a life saver. I’d highly recommend medication and at least try it as you can always stop it. I don’t give my son any on weekends or summer holidays etc to give his body a break and he’s coped great. He’s been taking it since he was around 7yo!

Thank you for this.

Just feel a bit lost as there is still a lot of stigma around taking medication. I’m just wondering what the side effects were for your son?

@Megsrohow is he getting in now?
