Is 10 too young for ‘skincare’?

All of Dds friends have started skincare routines, I have told her she is too young for all the things they’re using (hyaluronic acid being one!)
but she has started to get small sweat bumps around the top of her forehead and I thought maybe a gentle cleanser and moisturiser might be ok, no clue what would be ok for young skin though and don’t want her to ruin it by using products with lots of harsh chemicals in

Mine is the same age and uses a face wash and moisturiser from Simple (when she remembers!) I also agree with you that they are way too young for actives that could damage the skin barrier so want to avoid that for as long as possible

Saeurcat · 28/09/2025 09:02

I’d forgotten about simple! That’s where my own skincare routines started.
thank you 😃

I did a little beauty basket for my 10yr olds birthday. But was really careful about what went in it. Boots have released a range for teens. I got her Cetaphil face cleanser, the boots teen moisturiser, fun shower gel from sundae, Monday shampoo and conditioner. Then things like face wipes, hair things to do slick backs (which apparently is the style at her new school), stick on nails, clear mascara, tinted lip balm, body spray.

My daughter has very sensitive skin so she has been using face wash for number of years as normal shower gel on face is issue so are things like bath bombs etc.

I was worried it was a bit early but then I'd rather start her off on products that are good for her skin (no parafins no acids etc). The makeup they get with magazines is awful for her skin so rather she had proper products that don't cause issues.

I feel also that her having it but it not being a big deal may help stop the obsession later on.... this is yet to be tested

There was an article on the news last week that young girls shouldn't be using the skincare that they are using, I think they go for specific brands don't they?

Anyway a gentle face wash and moisturiser is all she should need or to just have/do because her friends are doing it.

leakycauldron · 28/09/2025 09:44

Dd is 9 and keeps asking for it... which is ridiculous considering she barely washes her face!
But all her friends have it... we have said no, there are plenty of reports that show that skincare products can disrupt hormones in kids.
It's all a marketing ploy and it's best to use it as discussion about how marketing works and just because something is sold in a shop doesn't make it a good thing.

Mischance · 28/09/2025 09:48

I absolutely agree that all this is a marketing ploy and that these products are completely inappropriate for a 10 year old. My 3 DDs did not start using such tings until they were away at uni. And even then they did not need them.

I shudder when I go into a department store and see all the racks of skin care stuff. Best to delay little ones getting involved in this con.

DappledThings · 28/09/2025 09:48

I have never used any skincare so I'm clueless about all of it but 9 and 10 year olds knowing about skincare brands and caring about it is really depressing.

13 or 14ish is the earliest I'd hope to hear DD start to be interested but that's probably a forlorn hope. She's 7 now and it's not been mentioned so far but some of her friends have routines and it's horrible.

userhallball · 28/09/2025 09:49

I'm trying to install good habits with my dd but agree they don't need a massive routine with lots of different products and ingredients. We have a very basic face wash (simple) and moisturiser cetaphil

She is at the age where she is starting to get a few very small pimples, she dances 4 nights a weeks and gets sweaty so just encouraging cleaning her face every evening

thank you 😃
Mine was Anne French!! 🤣

aWeeCornishPastie · 28/09/2025 09:52

face wash and moisturiser only at that age I would say. Maybe witch hazel as a mild toner. Definitely no need for serums and all the other hype at rhqt age

Saeurcat · 28/09/2025 09:52

I totally agree about the marketing, even branded clothes and trainers seem to be big amongst younger children these days, I didn’t have a pair of branded trainers until I was mid high school!
Dd does dance twice a week and horse riding so she does get really sweaty, she’s just been using a cloth and water to wipe over her face but with the bumps I thought it might be worth getting a gentle cleanser

I should add that she is in the early stages of puberty so her skin is definitely more oily than this time last year

DD is a bit older but Spots and Stripes seems to have worked well for her.

user2848502016 · 28/09/2025 10:32

My DD is 10.5 and already going through puberty and has some spots, so she uses a face wash and simple fragrance free moisturiser. Nothing fancy.
I don’t agree with young girls using all sorts of serums etc as I think it ruins their skin.
She likes using bubble bath/ bath bombs sometimes which I think is pretty harmless- but I do have to be careful what she uses as she has quite sensitive skin.

KiwiFall · 28/09/2025 12:16

I think my daughter was older by maybe a couple of years. We too went down the simple gentle face wash and moisturiser. Unfortunately you see these people on instagram with 20+ item skincare routines.

xanthomelana · 28/09/2025 12:53

Face wash and a cleanser fine for a ten year old but hyaluronic acid absolutely not. They don’t need that at their age and it could do more harm than good.

TheFormidableMrsC · 28/09/2025 13:04

Do not use any sort of actives on young skin. At the most, some Cerave or Simple wash and moisturiser. My DD works for a large brand and they have a policy about selling skincare to children because it’s not made for them. Honestly, why can’t they just be 10 and not have “routines”. It’s ludicrous.

JaninaDuszejko · 28/09/2025 16:23

Soap and water should be sufficient for a 10 year old, get her a nice gentle facial wash bar and tell her that with people with beautiful skin like her don't need a fancy skincare routine. Most children would benefit more by being encouraged to wash their face properly rather than messing around with expensive products in single use plastic. And I say that as the mother of two older teenage daughters, so I've been through this. They know makeup is for fun and if they use it they need to cleanse properly but the most important things are actually 1) don't smoke or sunbathe 2) drink lots of water 3) eat a healthy diet 4) get plenty sleep.
