What books would you recommend for an 11 year old girl?

She’s not a massive fan of reading but was won over by the Lottie Brooks books - anything similar you recommend? She also enjoyed ‘a kind of spark’

There are a few other books by the Kind of Spark author about the other sisters.
my daughter is a very reluctant reader-she liked ‘There’s a boy in the girls’ bathroom’, ‘Skellig’, and she’s going to start the Murder Most Unladylike series next (once she’s finished the latest Lottie Brooks book!).

My 11 year old DD also isn’t a fan of reading, much to my dismay, but also reads the Lottie Brooks books, and another series similar is Dork Diaries. There’s also Tom Gates which is similar but a male main character.

I don't really have any recommendations for books I'm afraid, but if she isn't big on reading, maybe audiobooks would help get her into it? Especially if it's the start of a series and then buy her the other books for her to continue the journey so she's already invested when she starts? Audible often have great offers to join and get a couple of audio books for £1 or if you have a Spotify subscription you get 15 hours of audiobooks included :) Similarly, if there are any films/TV shows based on a book series that are halfway through, picking up the series from where the TV/film is up to might give her and incentive to read them and follow characters and storylines she already knows?

Kate DiCamillo has a lovely series, three friends around that age and each has their own book. Brilliantly written. Raymie Nightingale, Beverly right here and Louisiana’s way home . My name is Mina by David Almond is brilliant too

My 11yo loves Lottie Brooks and also likes diary of a wimpy kid so you could try those

My daughter loves Lottie Brooks. She also enjoys all the Jacqueline Wilson books (some of the topics are quite grown up so tread carefully and check them before she starts). She's just read Darcy Burdock and loved it. She also enjoys the Malory Towers series.
Is your daughter into horses? There are loads of books about girls and friendships and growing up in the pony club / stable gang genre, like the Starlight Stables Gang series and others like that.

Jacqueline Wilson books.

More a dipping into one, not a novel, but there's a book called 'Strong is the new pretty' which is lovely photos of real tween girls and quotes of them talking about things they like about themselves that aren't related to their looks. It's such a great book for that age group I think. Someone got it for our oldest at about 11 and I really appreciated it.

DD enjoyed Girl Online by Zoe Sugg

Martymcfly24 · 03/10/2025 22:56

All of the above are great. I teach that age and Lottie Brooks is a big hit. The Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry trilogy is excellent. Nina Peanut is also very popular.
My 10 yo dd has just started reading all my old Babysitter Club Books and she loves them, I must have a look for my sweet valley high and Pony club books too.
