Hey first time posting here 😬 my 13 year old wants to shave her legs and I’m ok with this but my question is before she does anything is there a better option then shaving? If I could turn back time I know I would have gone a different route then shaving now I’m older and a little wiser and there seems to be way more choice of products/techniques then there was in the 90s What is the best route to go down i.e creams, strips, wax although I’m aware waxing does hurt but I’m just throwing examples. Advise apreciated thank you x

My daughter has been shaving her legs and underarms since she was 9, she just uses a razor in the bath or shower (I showed her how/did it for her for the first time). No need to overcomplicate, but I’d give her the choice how she does it, there’s no way dd would have chosen a painful route for herself, and my mind boggles at people putting strong chemicals over a huge area of a child’s skin so shaving was the only route I considered.

it is also what I do - my mum has always waxed but I’d never pay for something I can easily do myself for free 😂 I’ve never had an issue, shaving is there on demand and takes seconds!

I probably said it wrong let’s just say teen me and all my friends only ever got taught hair removal was with a cheap razor and how to treat our knee and ankle wounds after 😂 just seems to be way more available options now.

I was using cream as a teenager in the 60s. Did you never read a magazine or wander round Boots?

Use a lady shave electric razor safe and easy to use.

whats her kin colouring. If she’s not too dark and has dark hair I recommend laser hair remove. You can go to a professional or buy one. If you buy one she should shave and use Braun IPL Laser weekly for 3 weeks and then fortnightly for a couple of months. My legs are nearly hair free. I didn’t finish lasering them as I got pregnant. My son is nearly 5 and the bits that went haven’t come back. You can’t laser when you might tan so best to wait until October though.

Epilator, but maybe do a shave first so the hairs aren't too long. I've used an epilator for years now and just upgraded from a 16 year old one to a new one and the new one is much less painful and quieter. It's so quick and easy and she can do it watching TV in her room every few days. It gets less painful the more you do it. Just avoid doing it for the first few times the week before her period, everything is more sensitive then.

Does it hurt a lot?

I just got a (men's) electric shaver. I had a cheap women's shaver that stopped working and started pinching after a few times. I read here that men's shavers and razors are better than women's versions, so I got a Braun shaver that was half price at Boots. It's not the smooth soft shave that a razor does, but she cares about how it looks and therefore is perfectly fine. it's wet and dry use, so she can use it in the shower if she wants to. I didn't want her to use razor's yet because we have dark thick leg hair and grows so prickly and obvious that we get those raised red bumps that just make it more evident. I didn't want to buy creams because she's only 12 and I worry about chemicals and toxins on her skin. She would not cope with wax and epilators. I'm saving to get one of those LumeaIPL devices but I think it will have to be a Black Friday or Boxing Day purchase. I've been saving Boots Advantage Points for 6-7 years for this 😅

Let her shave now but once she’s 16 invest in laser. I only started laser at 50 and wish I had done it sooner, it’s a total game changer. I’m very hairy and after 2 sessions my leg hair is reduced by at least 80% and underarms is gone after 5 sessions

Gone for good? Or do you have to do this on an ongoing basis like waxing?

Gone for good. It gets rid of hair completely so that it doesn’t grow back

whackamole666 · 19/06/2025 11:48

Epilator is good, tugs hair out rather than cutting so it grows back finer and no stubble.

It can sting a bit to begin but not as painful as wax.

StarCourt · 19/06/2025 14:03

DD who is 16 uses one of those epilators that looks like a large pebble that rubs the hair off

no you barely feel it

Jemimapuddleduk · 19/06/2025 21:54

Absolutely fine. My daughter has been shaving from age 11. She does loads of sport and was self conscious. Just get a decent razor and gel. I remember nearly butchering my legs with a bic razor at a similar age!
