Hi new to mumsnet. I was just wondering how i get my child to stop swearing. For a bit of context he is 14 years old and a few weeks ago he has started swearing often. I was wondering how i should discipline him or should i not be worried.

Thanks

Can he switch it on and off depending on context? Our children swear like troopers around us but know not to infront of grandparents.

You won't entirely stop him, so don't even think that you can. It is normal amongst teenagers at school or with their friends and as you usually won't be there then what are you going to do about it?

You can ask him not to swear in your presence (and not in the company of grandparents either, I guess) and ensure he knows that there is a time and a place where it may be acceptable or not. So no swearing at people personally or making them feel intimidated.

That was all I did, but hoping to stop it altogether is unrealistic. Admittedly, I do let rip sometimes myself too. 🙄😃

For me, context is everything.

I swear alot, never ever at my children but in general so i cant therefor expect them never to do it and I know they do but not really infront of me.

I think its quite natural and normal and at 14 your doing well tbh as mine are 10 and 12.

Same here, I think as long as they have restraint in certain social situations it's fine, we try to be as respectable to each other as possible and they wouldn't swear so casually so often in front of us, but we don't put shame around swearing in our house. I wouldn't punish my teens for swearing if they stub their toe for example.
