Periods for young girls

My just turned 7 year old little girl is very big for her age, I wasn't but I started my period at 9! We have already discussed periods a little bit as my mum never expected me to be so young so we didn't talk about anything and I didn't have a clue what was happening and it was terrifying! So I want my little girl to be prepared!

She absolutely loves reading so I'd like to get her a book to help explain stuff but all the 'growing up' books I've found seem a bit old for her yet, as even though she's very big she's still very young acting and making her think about boys and sex at this age seems too soon as I don't want to force her to grow up too quickly if she doesn't need to.

Does anyone have any suggestions of books for younger children or what has anyone else done?

Has she actually started developing yet? Menses start on average 2 years after breast bud development.

When you say “very big” what do you mean?

If you think imminent, I’d buy a book but just focus on the chapter about periods

I think you can afford to wait a year though

No I don't think she's developed anything yet

She's just 7 and wearing age 9-10 clothes.

Dr Zoe Williams You Grow Girl is good, is recommended from 9 but maybe you could read it together and focus on the bits you think are necessary

By 7-8 most will have found out what sex is (and be laughing at it)

You don’t need to make a big deal about that side of things but she needs the facts RE adolescence.

No, just really tall and looks older!
Used to take her out when she was 3 and kept getting asked why she wasn't in school!

I will just keep an eye for signs.. and produce a book on about a year..!

Absolutely no rush then :)

Hi,
you probably have a couple of years but no harm being prepared.

Corcra · 21/04/2025 22:51

Check out the books by Robie H. Harris. I found them excellent. I got them all in the library and I bought one.
You can just focus on the parts about puberty for now. It's difficult when they're so young.

my mum was the same with me (got mine relatively early too!) here are some articles she could read that could help with basics https://weareluna.app/articles/periods-and-hormones/ wishing your dd all the best x
