Washing period pants

Help. Some of my daughter period pants never seem to come clean and just smell. I rinse multiple times in cold water, then soak with either detergent or bicarb. I don't wash with softener and don't tumble dry them.

What do others do?

Are some brands better than others?

She prefers the M&S ones but we have modibody as well. Wasn't keen on the Next or Sainsbury's ones.

Zoflora?

I don’t do anything special. They go in the wash with the rest of the washing, 30 or 40C, non-bio, no softener, then hang them outside to dry.

I rinse them fairly enthusiastically at the time, then shove them into a wet laundry bag. As a rule, I just then wash them with the regular washing (darks) on 40 degrees.

I used to obsessively rinse them, then hand wash them and leave to ry etc, but like yours, they never really got clean. I find this way, the blood doesn't get a chance to dry as the wet panties are in the wet wash bag, and then they get washed quite soon - I try not to leave them in the bag for more than 24 hours.

I have a mix of modibodi & Next.
The only ones that had instructions were the Modibodi's.

So I cold wash with ariel only on a hour long wash.

If they're smelling you need to strip wash them. Google will give you the guise on how to do it.

Philandbill · 28/10/2024 12:46

I soak them in a cold wash with bio powder and then a normal 30 wash. Trying not to think of the cost to the environment of double washing🙄But they do smell fine. And DD much prefers them to pads etc and they don't leak overnight.

@Tooffless what is a strip wash please?

HappyTwo · 28/10/2024 12:47

I rinse and then wash and dry with other dark clothes - some (modi body) are years and years old and are fine. I think you are handwashing them? stick them in with the rest of the washing.

WaneyEdge · 28/10/2024 12:47

I put mine on the rinse cycle then wash straight away on 40 degrees. It is harder this time of year as you can’t tumble dry them and it rains a lot!

Singleandproud · 28/10/2024 12:50

I chuck them in a (short) wash on their own and then do them again with the dark towels with detergent and Dettol anti bac - same as I was everything and I never used softener. I've never had an issue with them not being clean though even when I used to hand rinse then wash.

Drying can be a pain though so on the airer or laid over a radiator and that radiator turned on full so they don't smell damp as they can take ages to dry.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 28/10/2024 12:50

Unheated fast wash to rinse then a standard wash and dry on the radiator or heated airer

Spedledrift · 28/10/2024 12:52

I keep them in a bucket of water with some antibac/antifungal laundry rinse in the water, until I have four or so pairs. Then I wash them all together in the machine on a quickish cycle (45 mins ) then also put them through with the next proper load of washing on a full cycle. Cold water or 20'C. With another splash of laundry rinse in the softener tray. I used to have issues getting them properly clean like you OP but this system works great

bugaboo218 · 28/10/2024 12:58

Rinse by hand initially- just water

put in a lidded bucket with some napisan and soak for a few hours or overnight if I have a lot of them.

wash on the short cycle 30 mins on their own at 40 with non bio powder

Then wash on a long 40 cycle with non bio, no softener and do an extra rinse at the end .

Modi body and M and S the above is time consuming, but they do come out clean and fresh without odour or smells.

Therealmetherealme · 29/10/2024 09:22

Thanks all, I'll look into strip washing. Throwing them in with the normal wash just makes everything else smell, so I machine wash them on their own. I probably do a mix of what others do, glad I'm not missing something. I've ordered a lidded bucket and will try to get them soaking asap, not easy with a pre-teen who doesn't seem to quite understand.

It seems like most people also have the same brands so that's reassuring.
