When tweens get their first big crush

Is there a way to help them navigate it?
And when I say navigate I mean make sure they don't act stupid over it and get too obsessed

I know because my DS (who is now a well adjusted young man) admitted to me that he wishes he didn't act like an idiot back in year 7. He felt "overwhelmed" by the feelings and went around saying how much he liked this girl. And then he got teased about it and then she found out and didn't like it and was a bit cold to him.

He compares this to 6th form when he really liked someone and told her (before telling others) and even though this girl didn't feel the same way she remained friends with DS after.

I have no answers but you do have my sympathy.
My two are 16 and 17 and I can confirm, it doesn't get easier! I've had to navigate the first loves, "first times" and the first breakups. All three of which lead to emotional turmoil and a difficult environment to co-exist in!

My DS still hasn't had his first girlfriend. The main thing I wanted to get it (if I didn't convey myself well) was how to make tweens not be like obsessed and think it's real love.

Also perhaps how a boy should not come across as a "weirdo" or a "creep"
