Supporting DD with friendship issues

DD is in yr 7. She found it really hard to settle and some unpleasantness with some mean girls at the start of the year meant she was alone a lot but then she found a little group of misfits and became very happy for a period of time in a group of 4.

A 5th girl kept flirting between groups and stirring up trouble, none of the four were very keen on her but I always encouraged DD to be friendly with everyone

One of the original 4 was her closest friend but around Easter that girl decided to join another group of friends. I don't know whether it was because there was drama being created in the original group but most likely she found the other group more cool or fun. I get that girls' friendships are fluid at that age. That girl is still friendly with the rest of the group but with DD she is awkward. I imagine it's because she feels guilty for dropping DD.

DD is so sad and isn't getting over it a month on. She isn't sleeping, and she still cries about it. She still has the other girls, who she does like, although not as much as the original friend, but the drama girl seems to have become a permanent fixture of a fourth in the group and she still creates trouble - like telling one girl something that another said when it isn't true. Luckily the others have worked this out and will actually ask if the thing was said and they ascertain it wasn't. None of them really like this new girl but don't want to ostracise her or cause any trouble even though they are fed up that she says mean things and then pretends everything is normal.

What can I do for dd in terms of advising her? She misses her old friend who is now in the other group, she feels like she can't abandon her two friends and go into a new group herself but the new one is making her miserable. I keep telling her to style it out and not show she is sad and to just be friends with of the groups but she is feeling bad for her other friends if they get stuck with the troublemaker
