Girls' height

Dd turned 10 in November and measures 53" in height. She is among the less tall girls in her year and it is starting to bother her.

How tall is / was your dd in year 5 and 6 and how much do they tend to grow during this time?

Many of the year 5 and 6 girls in dd's school are taller than I was when starting secondary. Can we expect a significant growth spurt between 10-11?

I think my DD was similar in Y5 but did grow a bit. She's still small but a more reasonable 5' 2" now.

Mumsafan · 10/02/2023 07:58

DD is 5'8" in year 11 and not sure she will grow anymore ( I am 5'9"). She was tall in years 5/6 as well (about 5'3"). There were taller girls than her in Year 7 but she is taller than them now as they seemed to stop growing in height in Year 8/9.

I shouldn't worry - they all grow at different rates. DS1 was 5'6" at 16 and by 19 was 6'2".

Was126orbustandmaybebust · 10/02/2023 07:59

5'3" at 10 isn't small is it?
DD1 was under 5'at 10 and is 5' 7" now

Depends on puberty..
I think there's a growth window of about 4 years.
My DD was tall amongst her peers at primary but didn't grow much more at high school. She's the same size in yr 11 that she was in yr7.
She's now one of the smaller girls at 5'4"

OP said 53”.

I read it as 5' 3" at first but when I reread the OP has said 53" which I think equates to 4' 5"?

WeCome1 · 10/02/2023 08:03

53” is about 25th centile on those charts btw. So on the shorter side but only a bit.

Hoppinggreen · 10/02/2023 08:04

DD was 5ft 3 in Y6 and then didn’t grow any more. She started Y7 as one of the tallest and ended Y11 as one of the shortest.
I am only 5ft 4 but her Dad is over 6ft and her “little” brother was 6ft by Y9.
Once she started her periods she didn’t get any taller

OP said 53”.

Oh yes I see that now - I have never heard of a person measured in inches so I thought it was just missing a '

PuttingDownRoots · 10/02/2023 08:16

My nearly 10yo (y5) is 140cm and 11.5yo (yr7) is 150cm.

While these are apparently quite standard heights, and a lot of other girls are similar, there are many a lot taller. Bit of a surprise for DD1 as she was the tallest until Yr4 but hasn't hit puberty yet!

FiFoFive · 10/02/2023 08:27

Thank you that's all helpful to know. It's just strange how many are shooting up at this age but not dd. The chart is very useful @WeCome1! I can see the confusion in terms of inches an ft, I personally measure in cm but converted (wrongly). Dd is 135.5 cm, that's probably 4.4ft. She was a tall baby and then mostly around 50th percentile. All the girls in her year seem a lot more ahead of her in terms of height, development and maturity but I appreciate they all develop at quite different rates as preteens and during puberty.

My Dd was always in the middle height wise in her in primary class. I think at ten she was about 5ft tall.

Now she is almost 14 and 5’8”. I am very tall so it’s no surprise that she is. And dd is now taller than nearly all her classmates and teachers. She grew the most hitting puberty about 12.

I think just like women, girls will have a natural variation in heights. I would look at the parents’ height to get an accurate idea of what the dc will be eventually. There is a formula if you Google it. And expect the most growth around time menstruation starts.

Seeline · 10/02/2023 08:32

My DD was that height when she started secondary - she only grew tall enough to not need a car seat after she left primary. She's 18 now and is 5'3". She grew 2 of those inches between 16&18. I think she is still growing very slowly.

Are you and her Dad tall OP? Or is she likely to be shorter anyway?

Mariposista · 10/02/2023 08:49

She needs to know that men and women, boys and girls, all come in different shapes, sizes and heights. Look around at all the adults she knows, some will be taller or shorter than others. This is genetic and there is bugger all she can do about it, so there is no point 'being bothered'. Unless she is an actual dwarf (and even that wouldn't matter - look how amazing Ellie Simmonds is), her height was determined at conception.

BusySittingDown · 10/02/2023 08:56

My DD2 is almost 12 and about 4'7.

I'm 5'2 (and a half 😉) and my DD1 at age 10 was shorter than me but not as small as DD2 is at 11. DD1 is now 15 and she's 5'9.

wonderstuff · 10/02/2023 08:57

I was always one of the shortest in school, I had a growth spurt at about 16 and I’m now 5’4” so not terribly short, I was also one of the youngest with a May birthday, so that was a factor. At primary I’m not sure how tall I was, but always the shortest or second shortest.

wonderstuff · 10/02/2023 08:59

Conversely dd1 was always one of the tallest in primary and now in Y10 she’s average, a few friends who were shorter than her all through primary are now a little taller than her.

34and3 · 12/02/2023 13:46

Dd12 is 5'5" and now fully grown (had spinal fusion surgery so definitely done growing). She's very average amongst her friends.

resipsa · 12/02/2023 15:40

DD12(in late Jan) is 170cm and the tallest girl in Yr 7. She hates it. She was also the tallest in primary. Dad is 6'4'' so no surprises. I tell her she'll enjoy it one day!

AliceMcK · 15/02/2023 01:48

Almost 11yo is approx 4’5maybe 6”, there is her and one other girl about the same height, my DD probably slightly taller but other girl is 6 months younger.

DD dose get down about it, she ended up quitting netball because she was so self conscious about being so small next to the other girls. Dosnt help that her younger sister is only a few cm’s shorter than her.

I just constantly remind her she’s going to shoot up and will definitely be taller than me (5’2”) before she knows it and even if she dosnt there is nothing wrong with being short.

WhiteNoiseMoreToys · 15/02/2023 01:59

I was the smallest in my class, standing now at 5ft on the dot.. even at 27 years old I still get ‘short’ comments. Like some people have never seen a shorter person before.

But as tiresome as it gets, you learn to just let it go over your head (pretty easy when you this short anyway!)

Plus, as her mother your only response to her complaints about her height are “but all the best things come in small packages” 😂

CoffeeWithCheese · 09/04/2023 20:29

11 year old is about 5 foot and a little bit now (comparing her to my mum and my known height) - pretty middly for her year group - but it's all bloody legs and I'm expecting her to end up on the taller end of the range as her dad's 6 foot 7 and all legs - he just really shot up toward the end of growth spurt range apparently.

My 10 year old is about half an inch or so shorter than her sibling - but she IS probably at the taller end of her year group (they're in diff school years). She was longer bodied but in recent years the legs have taken off as well.

The eldest was premature but notably "long" even as a baby.

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 09/04/2023 20:53

Dd is 13 and is about 5'2. I don't think she has much growing left to do. I am 5'3 and her dad isn't tall so she's not going to be tall. Her feet are a 3 (only just) so I think she will have small feet too.

YellowGreenBlue · 09/04/2023 22:10

My DD grew around 6 inches between the end of Y5 and the end of Y7.
