Contract or payg for 10 yo

BlackYellowBlue · 17/01/2023 15:32

My ten yo got her first phone earlier this year without a sim. She now wants to chat to friends on whattaapp etc. Which option is better payg or contract?

She doesn't go out by herself so wouldn't need to phone me etc. At the moment she has little use for data outside the house apart from a nice to have.

I'm out of the loop with how payg works but thinking this may be a good option to start with?

I've always had them on a contract with the overspend set at zero.

We've always used Giffgaff SIM only, you can change the package month by month so once she does start going out and needing data its easy to change it plus you can limit it. We all keep a few £ PAYG on as well just in case the package runs out but I have it limited to one top-up of £10 in any month. I can't remember the last time mine or the DCs accounts actually topped up.

So you just want to pay for a sim card?
We paid for our own handsets and pay a monthly fee for a sim card through EE.

Nutrigrainygoodness · 26/01/2023 07:41

I pay £10 for dds giffgaff sim.
Unlimited texts and calls and 10gb of data (possibly 15gb) I know it's more than what I get and I pay £30 on O2. 🙄

TwoStepsAhead34 · 26/01/2023 07:43

Both of mine are preteens.
They have SMARTY- 12GB data, unlimited calls and texts, £7.20 per month.

TwoStepsAhead34 · 26/01/2023 07:44

Oh and it's a monthly rolling contract

buckeejit · 26/01/2023 07:45

I've never had a contract & I'm 45. Giffgaff goody bags can roll on each month & work for me

Squiblet · 31/01/2023 21:44

1pmobile is good for PAYG. A £25 top up seems to last forever.

CakeIsMyFavouriteAndBest · 31/01/2023 22:02

Giff gaff here for all of us. Started my youngest (12) on a lower amount and increased it once she started secondary and was using it more. Easy to change if you need to and if you did run out of data etc it just starts your next month early.

Eastereggsboxedupready · 31/01/2023 22:04

Your 10 yo doesn't need a phone at all.

Firstly, if you want to set parental controls you'll have to install WhatsApp and any other apps first, if you can, because when you register her phone though parental controls it will block you setting up apps with 16 or whatever as a minimum age.
Setting up parental controls means that you can program her phone to be inactive overnight.
We're on PAYG renewing bundle with ASDA for £5/month which gives unlimited UK calling minutes and texts + 3G of data.
In Dec 2019, I gave a 10yr old an iphone and it was great. She used it sim-less for ages to facetime her dad in hospital and when covid hit I could forward emails from her teacher with work to do during lockdown.

My 9 year old has GiffGaff PAYG and you only need to top up every 4 months I think. She doesn't even need the phone, as she has an iPad, but her grandparents bought it for her. She can only use it on WiFi now the £10 credit has run out, which it did very quickly as she sometimes used it whilst out, forgetting she wasn't on WiFi. Once she starts walking to school on her own in Y6 etc. then I will get her a cheap contract or GiffGaff goody bag so she can always call me etc but for now she doesn't actually need one.
Having said they, the Lebara deals look so cheap that it's probably not that much more expensive than topping up £10 every 4 months.

Flumpywoo · 03/08/2023 19:16

I just googled it to see when I need to top up next and it's actually every 6 months, otherwise they disconnect your number.

Why's that?
