HPV jab

Hello,

I know there have been other threads on this but none are very up to date and I am unsure about what to do.

My DD is in year 8 and has been offered the HPV jab. When the jab first came out it had a lot of negative press and I was sure I wouldn't let a child of mine had it.

But I haven't heard anything in recent years.

WWYD?

i'd cert let her have it.
wish it had been around in my day.
don't you want her to be protected from poss cancer.

indecisivewoman81 · 24/11/2022 17:01

Of course I want to protect her. But I'm looking for advice. The side effects at the time were quite scary

I had all three of mine, no issues at all. Only side effects were a sore arm and a bit sleepy for a few days.

I've never had HPV and would recommend it to improve her chances of avoiding infection in the future.

Actively strove and went to a huge effort to get my teenagers the HPV vaccine (long reasons why for us it wasn't just given at school). It's SO important. I'd have paid for it had it not been available on the NHS, and it's a pretty expensive vaccine.

bigbadbarry · 24/11/2022 17:08

I had to pay for it for my eldest (we were living overseas) and it was expensive! Worth it though. So happy my younger DC can have it on the NHS.

Moneyworrier123 · 24/11/2022 17:10

I was the first year group to be offered it at school. Had all 3 and no side effects. All smears so far clear and nurse told me at the last that it’s so effective in wales they’ve gone to every 5 years for those with the jab.

Rowgtfc72 · 24/11/2022 17:12

Dd had it in Yr 8 and came home early feeling sick. Quite a few kids were off school the next day.
She was definitely having the jab though, wish it had been around a lot sooner.

FishnetsNightdressCrisis · 24/11/2022 17:12

Absolutely they should have it, I only wish it had existed when I was younger.

I really worry about HPV, I've had persistent HPV at every smear test over the past 9 years, I worry about other parts of my body that it could be in that doesn't get picked up at screening, at least there is the cervical screening programme for that. I've had to have two colposcopies, one lot of LLETZ treatment for CIN2 cell changes. I'd have much rather not had all that to deal with.

My kids will absolutely be having the vaccine and I hope it means my daughter will avoid all of the above and that my son will be protected too.

greenacrylicpaint · 24/11/2022 17:14

it's very safe and effective. so effective that the who says that one dose gives good protection.
www.who.int/news/item/11-04-2022-one-dose-human-papillomavirus-(hpv)-vaccine-offers-solid-protection-against-cervical-cancer

my teens (both sexes) have received one dose each.

Creameggs223 · 24/11/2022 17:29

Ds has had 2 doses only side effect was a sore arm which lasted a day or 2.

indecisivewoman81 · 24/11/2022 17:40

Thank you so much for the replies. It's has helped to put my mind at ease

Yes they were, but things do seemed to have calmed down. I think because the supposed side effects weren't actually side effects from the vaccine.

My only issue with having it in Y8 is that my DD was a long way off needing it (I appreciate why it's given in Y8, not every girl is like my DD) but it seems the vaccine in still effective today in the cohort who first had it, which gave me hope and reassurance. If not, I'd have waited a couple of years for DD to have hers. I'm now very glad she's had it.

Onnabugeisha · 24/11/2022 17:42

My DDs had it, no side effects. My DSs missed the boat, but if they’d offered it they would have taken it. I would definitely recommend it as it prevents cancer.
