Best period pants for an 11 year old

Oomph · 05/03/2022 20:23

My 11 year old had just started her period. It’s light and have bought her some pads, but I feel period pants would be more convenient going forward.

Which ones do you recommend, and how many should I get? How often do they need changing?

I’ve used a moon cup for yonks, so have never had a chance to use them.

Thank you!

Intrigued as DD is 9 and I want to be prepared.

narcdad · 05/03/2022 20:27

Primark period pants are very good, I tried them myself after being sceptical and definitely will use for my daughter when she starts.

I've about 11/12 pairs, rinse them out before you put them In The wash

Oomph · 05/03/2022 20:30

Many, thanks, that’s really useful.

Are they really absorbent, and do they wash well?

I use Thinx for myself, but I'm a lot heavier at the start now than I was pre kids so I felt I needed the extra absorbency. I've heard good things about Red/ ModiBodi and Primark too, I think you'd be fine with any for a teen.

Recommend only buying in black- I regret buying some light grey ones now as they do start to get some staining.

I change them once they start feeling a bit damp. This is twice a day for the beginning but at the end when I am barely on I just wear a light absorbency pair for the whole day like normal pants.

I wash mine with dettol antibacterial rinse in the wash as well as some bio liquid.

If this was my daughter I'd probably just get her a couple to experiment with at first to see if she likes the brand/ fit/ feel/ absorbency and use that to order more if she wanted them.

Modibodi have a teen range called "Red".

They are expensive though.

ouch44 · 05/03/2022 20:47

Cheeky pants are cheaper. My DD uses a mixture of those, Wuka and Modibodi. Only had one leakage when pants got stuck up her bum playing sport. Switched to shorts for sports and no further problems.

Lovemusic33 · 05/03/2022 21:03

My daughter uses Modibodi and primark, I bought her the bundle from Modibidi, they were pricy but worth it. We then discovered M&S and Primark do them a lot cheaper and they seem to be just as good.

lap90 · 05/03/2022 21:05

I have ones from primark and modibody and modibody are better IMO - also more expensive!

thefemaleJoshLyman · 05/03/2022 21:08

DD has modibodi, they are great. We've actually bought about 10. It has made her life much easier, one pair lasts a whole day.

WouldIBeATwat · 05/03/2022 21:11

DD started at 10 and uses the CheekyWipes boy shorts. She adds a reusable pad in the morning and takes it out in the afternoon so only needs one pair a day.

She has a modibody swimsuit which she finds very comfortable.

narcdad · 05/03/2022 21:11

@Oomph the primark ones wash well, I'm not very heavy though but I've tried the more expensive ones and found them less comfortable

This is interesting too. I think I’ll buy one expensive pair of knickers and then a bundle from Primark.

Thank you lovely ladies of Mumsnet ❤️

I've got enough for DD to be able to change twice a day if she wants to. She usually puts a fresh pair on in the morning, changes when she gets home from school and then just before bed.

She rinses them out in cold water then puts them in a wet bag until there's a full dark washing load.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 05/03/2022 22:32

Dd has sine cheeky ones which are a bit too snug now as I got them a couple of years ago for her to keep in her school bag waiting until she started her periods. Then she had some bamboo house ones. I have those too and really like them.

Dd prefers cloth pads really so doesn't need too many pairs. She usually wears the pants with a pad then she can either change the pad or just take it out when she's at school. Works well. She has a big zip up wet bag which she hangs in the bathroom when she's on, rinses her pads or pants and pops them in there then they just go on a short cold wash and dry on the airer.

Oomph · 06/03/2022 09:41

It’s really useful to hear how you all deal with it. I’ve been giving her instructions and we’re knicker shopping today.

I've had 2 babies and use Primark period pants. I wanted to try them before moving to a more expensive brand but I like them that much that I just bought more of the primark ones. Rinse once used then wash as normal but without conditioner

wingingit33 · 06/03/2022 13:17

Modibodi. One pair lasts all day. Dd is 11 and loves them

Oomph · 06/03/2022 14:00

My daughter seems to really like the idea of the modibodi shorts. I think they look very safe Grin

I’ve just brought some cheeky pants for myself. They are brilliant! I’ve got 5 pairs but I alternate with cloth pads on my heavier days as they are obviously easier to change throughout the day. I used them for the first time last month and was really impressed.

ChocolateChocolateEverywhere · 06/03/2022 14:18

DD has a mixture of Wuka, Cheeky and Primark. She likes the Wuka ones best as most comfortable. We have had flooding issues on the first couple of days and realistically on those days she needs to double up with a heavy pad and pants in the morning, and just the pants in the afternoon. But won't use the school loos!

Shieldingending · 06/03/2022 14:56

My daughter has tried multibody, cheeky wipes, and Primark. She finds modibodi the best – definitely the most absorbent. The others are ok for the last day or two. It probably depends how heavy your daughters flow is, my daughters is quite heavy and the modibody are definitely worth the money!

Oomph · 07/03/2022 17:47

Really great suggestions in this thread. Yesterday we went to primark and bought a pack of period hipsters. She’s only 11, so went for the xxs size.

Having said all that, after a couple of days of spotting, she’s now stopped bleeding completely, which means periods are probably not yet established. To be honest, not a bad thing, as I’m not sure she’s massively mature in matters of personal hygiene yet!
