Stinky 8 year old

Does anyone else's 8 year old boy smell like a teenager? We've noticed the start of BO. Unsure whether to introduce deodorant but he seems so little and young. 1st and only child

DSS is 9 ( about to turn 10) and definetly over the last couple of years hes started to smell particularly after any kind of exercise or general running around.
We currently just promote a show and talk about general health like when I go running I'll say I'm going for a shower because I'm all sweaty and stinky and no one wants to sit around with someone stinky. We remind him to wash after exercise.
Yeah I would say deodorant particularly on pe days wont go astray.

WhatsitWiggle · 15/01/2022 21:23

Got a girl rather than boy, but she started being whiffy at around 9. Do you use shower gel? We switched to soap, just a plain soap not Dove or anything with moisturiser, and that helped.

Also, rub a sports wash under the arms of clothes before washing. I was finding her school shirts especially clung onto the BO after a normal wash, so her clothes smelt even when she didn't.

QuizzicalEyebrows · 15/01/2022 21:35

Mine used anti perspirant as soon as they started getting BO.
No one wants to be the stinky kid in school

Stichintime · 15/01/2022 21:37

Get them to wash with anti bac soap then apply a roll on. Should do the trick for now.

LtGreggs · 15/01/2022 21:39

I have one DS that started being smelly at 8/9ish (15 now and still smelly!) and another who doesn't smell at all at 13, even after a rugby match.

Encourage showers and deodorant, keep bedding & pyjamas well washed!

Spudina · 15/01/2022 21:41

Switch shower gel to soap. . Make sure school shirts are 100% cotton and not man made fibres. Anti perspirant is a good idea. I’ve heard putting white vinegar in the wash is also good at getting rid of sweat from clothes.

Halo for washing bo works well.
If you feel too young for a proper deodorant there are more natural ones you can buy

Blankscreen · 15/01/2022 21:46

Dettol antibacterial wash additive get the bo smell out of clothes

Shower everyday with soap for arm pits.

Clean shirt for school everyday and t-shirts at the weekend.

Ds is 11 and DD is 8 and we are very open with them and say that they need to wash everyday etc otherwise they'll be the smelly kid at school.

Ds wears deodorant everyday DD just on pe days

Blush21 · 15/01/2022 21:46

I remember wearing deodorant from around 9 but just a roll on to start with. Have a little chat about how now their getting older they need to be a little
But better with hygiene and make sure they give their armpits a scrub. Perhaps a nice new soap for just them and start them off with a roll on?

ToooOldForThis · 15/01/2022 21:47

Stinky 9 year old dd, I use a roll on kids deodorant which is meant to be natural etc.
It's amazing how they turn stinky overnight!

Spudina · 15/01/2022 21:52

I’d never heard if kids deodorant! But I just googled it and Scrubingtons looks good.

ToooOldForThis · 16/01/2022 15:56

Oh dear sorry I clearly don't know how to do links, but it's called rock chick!

educatingrati · 16/01/2022 16:12

Pit rock (completely natural product with no nasties in it ) is great for this, but once they really start to really, really honk they might need something strongerGrin
(I use pit rock on my non working days as I don't get really pongy, but have to use proper chemicals to kill the whiff when working).

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/01/2022 20:35

Yes my Ds gets BO and he’s not even 8 (nearly though). Will look up kids deodorant for him, thanks!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/01/2022 20:37

I use salt of the Earth roll on myself as does teen Dd - we can’t have spray deodorant in the house due to her asthma

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/01/2022 20:43

I tried all the kid friendly, organic, unicorn approved ones.

She uses Mitchum now or you'd faint.

TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits · 19/01/2022 20:47

DD is 6 (7 in September) and she gets really stinky some days, especially in school uniform.

I got her a kids deodorant, which worked a treat.
She seems v. young but, as PPs have said, no one wants to be the stinky kid

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 19/01/2022 20:50

As a teacher who has taught many a stinky 9 year old, please don’t think he’s too young for deodorant. The other children won’t say anything now but they will start to notice and your son will be much better off you telling him than his peers.

Regular clothes washing as well as body washing. When DH’s T-shirts get a bit smelly in the armpits, I put laundry detergent straight onto each one and scrub it in. They then go on for a hotter wash than normal and that sorts the smell.

ExplodingCarrots · 19/01/2022 20:55

DD has been stinky since she was 7. She's 8 now. I started puberty super early so it seems she's following my path. She's got into a good routine with daily shower / wash , clean clothes , deodorant.

AlwaysNapTime · 19/01/2022 21:02

Just turned 9yo DS has been wearing deo for a few months now. Also has to shower daily otherwise smells quite minging, not necessarily BO though, more like cheesy feet but all over!
