Picky eater (getting a bit extreme)

Hi all,

I have a 10 year old neuro-typical ds. He's generally quite a happy little chap, football crazy and fun to be around - until it comes to food. He has always been what would be described as a "fussy eater" but has also always been very keen on his fruit and vegetables which has been great. I would say over the last 5/6 months though, he has become increasingly difficult to feed - especially main meals. The problems he has seem to be around mixing of textures, he doesn't like anything on his plate to be touching, won't touch hardly anything in a sauce (except chicken in white sauce from a bloody tin) so no meals like bolognaise, shepherds pie, pasta in sauce, stir fries in fact it would be quicker to list the things he will eat as main meals:
White rice
Chicken in white sauce from a tin Envy
Chicken nuggets
Eggs (hard boiled only)
Sausages (only thin pork sausages)
Occasionally a pizza (only pepperoni)
Chips / smiley faces
I'll serve these up with a healthy side of veg but now he's even starting to leave the veg.

Lunch boxes are also a nightmare to negotiate on top of the school's nut free and healthy food policies which I understand and respect, but he's literally going to school with a couple of pieces of fruit a yoghurt and a contraband flapjack which I don't think is enough to keep him going. He won't eat sandwiches, wraps or pittas.

Getting him to try new foods is frustrating and upsetting and usually ends in tears.

I'm at a loss of what to do with him and I'm thinking of taking him to GP, but since he's not really significantly underweight I wonder if I will be turned away. He's slim but not thin.

Any advice / books / resource recommendations would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you.

Look up ARFID.

The NHS aren't great at understanding or treating it but there are some amazing specialists out there.

I was just like your DS but have managed to improve with specialist therapy

Thank you! I will take a look. I'm pleased you managed to get some help.

Good luck!

Bottom line is he eats something.
What are his own suggestions of what he wouldn't object to eating? Things he would like to make for himself?

He would literally live on chicken in white sauce and rice with chicken nuggets if he could get away with it... we haven't made much progress. I'm thinking a call to the GP.
