Summer camp away from home for 12 yr old

I'd like my 12 yr old boy to have the experience of being away from home at a well-run camp and doing some research for this now. Not in Scouts etc. Has anyone experience of any such good camp? one friend recommended Gaeltacht Irish speaking week in Ireland, not sure what level of Irish is required, or there might be something in the UK?

You probably want PGL multi activity holidays.

I sent my 11 year old on the wet and wild PGL holiday on the Isle of Wight this year.
He had a fantastic time.
Have you thought about joining anything like Sea Cadets or Army cadets? They have some great times away.

Sorry just realised you said not scouts etc. Ignore me 😂

Are there no school residential he can go on?

Gaeltacht courses at age twelve tend to be three weeks long and attended by kids studying since age five, it might be a bit of a stretch for first time. There are activity based courses in Carlingford that may suit better.

No worries! We live in Ireland so prob looking for something outside those networks but wouldn't rule them out either

I know some families who have done 2 generations of Forest School Camps and rave about it. It’s the more progressive/hippy alternative to guides and scouts

Sometimes they are influenced by Steiner Waldorf, but, if they're not those one, we would give them a go too

My 11 year old went to PGL with his friend, you can book them on individually doesn't have to be in a group.

I did PGL age 13 to 16, each summer in France! Best summers of my life!! I'm 42 now, so this was 30 years ago!! (In those days we were drinking and smoking weed with the staff, and all sorts of other things happened!!! Which would never happen these days! ... Nowadays I'm pretty sure it's all safe with much better safeguarding etc... in place :)!)
