Why is my child so "itchy"

Whatwouldscullydo · 10/03/2021 07:40

I'm trying to work out why the heel she's started complaining over the last couple of weeks of being "itchy"

We already use products that are anti allergy there's literally nothing to react to Hmm

She is mainly moaning about the tights...her sisters old pure cotton non reactive, washed in ecover tights that she's worn under her trousers ( classrooms cold so she needs to layer up) for ages now.

No new products, nothing. Hmm

Negative covid test recently too and it pre dates the test.

@Whatwouldscullydo

I did a maintenance wash at the weekend to see if that would help.

I will switch to the eco leaf refil I bought which she was OK with last time. I barely use any anyway as I hate really strong smelling washing. Yes we have been drying outside..but she's not the chikd with hay fever 🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️

You should see how the skin on my legs reacts to being exposed to grass pollen!
Whatwouldscullydo · 11/03/2021 09:13

Ok so let me get this straight . I'm trying to cut down on power consumption as the dryers are expensive and I'm a single parent now. Drying in the house can cause damp/mould. Which my house is sadly prone too . I cant achieve the softness needed fir sensitive skin without either using a dryer or fabric softener both of which are kinda out now. ( although I will have to clearly start re using the dryer now as its probably the lesser of two evils) but drying outside can result in problems with pollen?

Is it too early for wine? Grin

I.blame my parents and their bad genes...its a family curse

Is she any better at all today OP? If her legs are already irritated from the tights it may well be that the skin is still a bit uncomfy for a bit, especially as she's still got to wear something fairly tight around her legs. I'd be inclined to just let her air her legs as much possible after school and see if there is any improvement over the next few days.

Comefromaway · 11/03/2021 09:35

@Whatwouldscullydo

Unfortunately we live in a hard water area u really notice if u don't use softener. I've stopped using using dryer so much as trying to cut my bills and my towels end up realky crunchy
When you say softner what exactly do you mean? I can;t use any fabric softener at all. Our water is dreadfully hard so I do a weekly maintenance wash with a cap of bicarb that keeps everything at bay.
Whatwouldscullydo · 11/03/2021 09:48

Still a bit itchy today jenny I've ordered a bunch of the suggestions. It's the weekend soon.she likely will just sit around in her pants and vest so will be able to recover a bit then. She doesn't like getting dressed at weekend Grin

come

Which part of the drawer to u put the bicarb? I usually just run it with nothing in but I might try that if it works

I blame my parents too. Both have had anaphylactic reactions and I seem to have inherited from both of them.

Can you wash your daughters’ stuff separately and just tumble dry that? As you say, drying indoors can cause other issues.

I have a friend who is allergic to cobalt. He cannot wear anything with any blue in as a result. It’s a total nightmare for him!

Whatwouldscullydo · 11/03/2021 09:54

It will be easier just to do all our stuff together.

Both dds have cut the labels out of alot of stuff so determining who's is who's when it comes to some items us just a pain in the arse. That's the trouble when you find say the perfect pair of non wedgie forming, non lacy trim , seamless, comfy pants..you buy for them both, they cut the labels out and then u r fucked Grin

That sounds realky hard

Just don't use bicarb with vinegar, frothy mess!!

FTEngineerM · 11/03/2021 09:55

I hate tights.. they make me itch.

Comefromaway · 11/03/2021 10:11

I just put it in where the powder would usually go. You don't need much. we moved house last year and I was shocked hw hard the water is here. If I don't do that weekly I get a black, gungy mess in the washing machine seals that gets onto the clothes.

Whatwouldscullydo · 11/03/2021 10:15

Thank you. I will give it a go shortly. I'm just finishing a coffee. I hate doing maintenance washes fir some reason they always make the machine smell Confused but then you have to do it especially in the hard water areas...

Whatwouldscullydo · 11/03/2021 10:16

Amd you FT tights are the absolute worse. I remember wearing them at high school. I was so pissed off we weren't allowed trousers I always had a rash on my thighs from the bloody tights

Hazelnutlatteplease · 11/03/2021 10:16

You can get silver sharpie that can be quite handy to mark clothing. It's not over durable, their may be a better version.

The eco egg will save on what you've paid pretty quickly. Tumble dryer balls are meant to speed up drying time, I'm not so convinced about that claim though.

grey12 · 11/03/2021 10:21

Do she moisturise??

I personally got very bored with spreading heavy creams on my thighs (got itchy because of sensitive skin and pool chemicals). Yeah, silly me.....

Nowadays I use sweet almond oil (cheap from supermarket next to black hair products usually) after I turn off the water of the shower (so still wet) all over my body and it's great!!!

Yes, I always assumed it was because it was releasing all the gunk. Sometimes if it's really bad I do a wash with bicarb followed by an empty wash.
Whatwouldscullydo · 11/03/2021 10:33

Its on now come if I disappear at some stage send help as I'm under a big pile of foam Grin

Yes grey usually she does although recently getting her to shut up and actually get dressed is proving to be a bit of a mission and we have forgotten. Mainly because I'm having that lovely stage of trying to get her to realise she's a bit to big now to stand around with a towel draped across her shoulders chatting, and to learn about privacy...

I will have to step up a bit more and keep on top of it

slooowdaysinlockdown · 11/03/2021 10:39

Hard water eczema house here too : Try adding water softener to the wash and ditching the fabric softener

Whatcouldshehavebeen · 11/03/2021 10:42

Is it constant itch? Feet/hands/face/nose? Or just where she wears clothes? Any rash?

Whatwouldscullydo · 11/03/2021 10:45

No rashes. Mainly just her legs really..

Anti histamines seem to work. It's only when she's wearing clothes really

OP posts:
Whatcouldshehavebeen · 11/03/2021 10:49

Liver problems can sometimes present with an itch. If it's easy to do so, I would request standard bloods from GP.

starfishmummy · 11/03/2021 10:57

Could it not just be the change of season? This is around the time I get itchier than usual, beginning of Spring and beginning of Autumn, for no apparent reason at all.

Me too.

QueenPaw · 11/03/2021 10:59

My legs get really itchy, especially my shins. Absolutely no idea why, but using a shower oil and then palmers anti ageing lotion seems to work

Whatwouldscullydo · 13/03/2021 12:21

On dumb question, so my new washing powder and dryer balls have arrived

What do you do with dryer balls. I have 6 how many do u put in at any one time. Now many times do you reuse them. If clothes are just going in fir a 2 min refresh ti soften I'm.assunung as they are dry they won't be needed fir that? Just if I'm fully drying?

OP posts:
Hazelnutlatteplease · 14/03/2021 14:02

I leave all of them (I have 8) in the tumble dryer and use them whenever I turn it on
