Lockdown weight gain

Hi looking for some advice. My daughter is by no means overweight but she has certainly put weight on around her bum and hips since Christmas. She's always worried about her thighs being large which I've always managed to deal with along with help from Mumsnet!

However she's just put some football shorts on and they are skin tight across her bum so she's very upset and I can see the gain if I'm honest (although I haven't told her that obvious). I honestly dont think her diet is that bad - good healthy meals with treats here and there. I don't want to eliminate treats because then that makes an issue out of it. We are active, daily exercise etc.

I just don't know how else to help her, or is this just how she is?!

Has she started her periods yet? My DD gained a bit of weight and became more shapely before starting her AF.

Do you know her height and weight? If you can find out (in a casual way) and calculate her BMI, it will help you understand if there is a problem.

Yes she started her periods age 10 - she's 12 now

I don't know her weight and I really don't want her to get fixated on the scales so not sure how to approach that. I guess it's just trying to watch what she eats and keeping her as active as possible until school and extra curricular activities start

I've just got her to do an 80's dance workout with me..... all was going well until Salt'n'Peppee came on and then it became inappropriate as there were some dodgy moves!! SmileSmile

@Dollygirl2008 what do you cook and what does she eat? More than the activity or lack of, it is what she eats and drinks in the course of the day.

I would say that a typical day (at home) is a bread roll for breakfast, or sometimes a boiled egg with toast. Lunch is usually a wrap either made into a pizza, or a thin with cheese, some chooped up veg and fruit, plus breadsticks or cheese twists. Dinner will be something like spaghetti Bol, toad in the hole, curry, jacket potatoe for example. She'll have a treat each night (maybe a small Kit Kat) and maybe a cup of tea in the afternoon with a couple of biscuits

I'd have a read of this guide from the Caroline Walker Trust.

What she's having now seems ok, my own DDs diet is pretty shocking, but maybe you could make a few tweaks? Smile

Muskox · 16/02/2021 19:08

Her diet sounds quite carb heavy OP. Could you think of ways to reduce carbs and increase veg and protein?

SummerHouse · 16/02/2021 19:14

We have one child borderline underweight and one borderline overweight. No advice really just make that point to show it's not necessarily something you are doing wrong. We are between a rock and a hard place trying to feed one up and cut back for the other. Confused

Dollygirl2008 · 16/02/2021 19:19

Yes that's a good point @SummerHouse - I guess she's still young and her metabolism is still sorting itself out
Will take on board about the carbs - hard though!!! She has lots of veg with main meals but will think about balancing it a bit more
