Oooops - sorry I gave your child Coke!

So, son’s bestie came to tea last night. He spilled some Diet Coke on his shirt so I threw it in the wash and he borrowed a top. Sent son in with the cleaned shirt today and got a text from mum saying thanks. I replied saying no worries, I know cola can stain if it dries. She took a bit to reply and then said ‘By the way, he isn’t allowed to have Coke’
This child has been eating at mine for 3 years! At least once a week in term time. And has never mentioned not being allowed Coke. Ooops mum fail.

You didn't fail. You never asked, he never told.

TheReluctantCountess · 27/11/2019 17:26

That’s her fault, not yours.

WorraLiberty · 27/11/2019 17:26

He's old enough to tell you what he's not allowed to have.

dementedpixie · 27/11/2019 17:28

She sounds a bit uptight. Did she say why he isn't allowed it? What age is he?

RandomWok · 27/11/2019 17:29

Little pickle has played you both. To be fair nobody asked but he probably should have admitted he wasn't allowed it at home. Grin

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/11/2019 17:30

I'd expect a parent to tell me if their child wasn't allowed something. Children can be very adept at getting what they aren't allowed.

Apolloanddaphne · 27/11/2019 17:30

How old is he? If neither he nor his mother have ever told you this, then how were you to know?

GrannyBags · 27/11/2019 17:30

They are 11. She wasn’t cross, thought it was funny

I always ask if there's allergies or anything they're not allowed before I have my kids friends over. If this mum didn't tell you then you couldn't have known. I would say lots of kids aren't allowed Coke when they're young but I wouldn't think twice about giving it to a child over 8 who was a guest at my house, if I hadn't been told they couldn't have it. I think she has been a bit passive aggressive, I'd reply and say, 'you never said, so I didn't know. I won't give it him again.' Then think no more of it.

At 11 unless there is a very good reason (and I assume if there was she would have told you!) I really wouldn’t worry at all

GreenTulips · 27/11/2019 17:33

I would assume most kids aren’t given fizzy pop at other houses. Mine never drank it unless a special occasion. It’s awful stuff.

EmmiJay · 27/11/2019 17:45

He had the coke, didn't melt and I suspect his teeth are all still intact. Also, good luck to her controlling what he drinks at school lol. He should have mentioned it though (yeah right like he really would).

Well having a friend over for dinner or to play, is a special occasion for many.

Sadik · 27/11/2019 17:53

It could be a LOT worse - a friend of mine discovered a mutual acquaintance (who was not a friend of mine for reasons that will be obvious) had offered her 17 y/o dd coke of the white powder variety at a party ....

GrannyBags · 27/11/2019 18:11

Funny thing is, my son never has Coke as he doesn’t like it. I asked about allergies when he first came over. Boys know they have been rumbled and both smiled innocently when asked if there was anything else they thought we should know!

I think it was a bit rude of her to say tbh. Not telling you is something she ought to take up with her son - you've kindly fed him, the only thing she needs to say is 'thank you'.
