So my dd is 10 and v hormonal to be honest I'm surprised she's not started mc yet, she's always been w bigger size as she takes after her dads family however in the last year she has just gained so much weight I've completely changed al of our eating habits and she eats really healthy and well (Altho does sneak and pintch the odd biscuit which she thinks I'm not aware of I called docs to see them as I think something might be underlining I was fobbed off no appointment needed app, however about 5 months ago she had a nasty accident in a scooter and snapped her ankle in three places resulting in emergency surgery and crutches for 9 weeks in total which caused her to become more less mobile then her usual teenage self, in this time she's gained more weight . This all came to a head last week when she went on a uk holiday to the sea side and wanted to go on a beach donkey ride with her younger brothers the man at the donkey stand was v insensitive in telling her he has to weigh her first she now weights 11 stone!!! Is 5 foot 3 maybe 5.4
He refused to let her on because of her weight which she was very upset about however she doesn't care she's at that age where self appearance means nothing to her but I am so worried I don't know where to turn or what to do she's now in adult clothes as nothing teen wise fits I've tried everything what do I do I am at my wits end and I am so worried about the effect this is having on her health and also how she will cope with peer pressure when secondary school hits next year!!

Any advice please

Is she active now her ankle is healed? She may be eating healthily but are her portions healthy? Sneaking biscuits shouldn't be necessary as long as her diet is balanced. The fact she's sneaking them is worrying in terms of attitudes to food.
Considering that she is obese then I'd be taking her back to the GP and rethinking her portion sizes and general diet and exercise.

Has she had blood tests to rule out a thyroid issue? What is she eating at school? Does she get pocket money - is she spending it on ‘treat’ foods?

@Lara53 she has packed lunch which I watch her make at home, things like fresh cooked chicken and salad wraps , are a fav so she doesn't eat at school, other then they provide fruit at break, I think she needs bloods done I am going to call docs today again and see what can be done ,

Good luck! It must be hard. I have no thyroid and a variety of hormone issues and I’ve put on 6+ stone in 11 years - it’s awful 😢

I’m upset tonight as my 10 year old DD puts weight on so easily. I’ve been watching what she is eating for ages and found out tonight she has been climbing to get to treats that are kept out of reach. I’m going to throw them all out tomorrow. She is looking quite fat tbh it’s very upsetting. I’m upset about her sneaking food and have no idea how to address that issue with her

At 10, she's a good one and a half stone over the 99th centile for weight although she seems to be well over the 99th centile for height (disclaimer: I can be a bit shit at plotting centiles).

Have you plotted her centiles OP? Is she following them over a long period of time?

My DN is on the 98th for both height and weight and always has been.

If you are still worried after plotting her centiles, have a read of this guide from the Caroline Walker Trust. It gives sample menus, recipes and portion sizes.

I know it's a bit obvious, but does she do any sport as well?

@Lellikelly26 I've had this same thing with sneaking food I don't really have a lot here that's unhealthy either but it's the constant hunger she is also glued to her bedroom and phone I've band her serval times but even then she doesn't seem to want to be family active or get out and play she is very tall and I've had a letter recently saying that at school they done a recent heath check at school and the letter home saying she's extremely over weight she starts secondary school in September I am at a loss on what to do we eat healthy can't see whag is going wrong

What exercise do you do as a family - is bike riding, swimming, walking rather than driving etc. What does she enjoy doing?
Is good used as a reward/comfort?

The thing is, "healthy" food depends on portion size. It sounds like a complete overhaul is needed so I'd be pushing for a referral to a dietician and keeping a food diary on my fitness pal so you're really understanding calories. I have 3 dds and one sneaks food - she's the biggest and I have a feeling weight will be an issue for her as she gets older due to her attitude to food. I've got into park run so dc are joining me in that too which I think is a really good habit. Good luck op.

Also I think the bmi calculators are incorrect etc. My daughter is 10. Year5. Shes 4ft 11 and got on scales yesterday and was 43.8kg on bmi tracker it says grossly over weight. Shes isn't over weight and isnt skinny she wearing a size 6 pair of ladies petite Jean's today just remember they get puppy fat before pubity x

I agree with what people are saying about portion sizes, it’s very easy to think that if you eat fairly healthily then you/your children will be fine, but ultimately if you regularly eat more calories than you’re burning off then you are going to gain weight regardless. Obviously being active helps, but for adults weight is far more dependent on diet so I’m assuming it’s the same for children? If you put her height and weight in to a BMI calculator as an adult (she is only an inch or so shorter than I am!) then she is still classed as overweight but not to the same extent as using the children’s BMI calculator. Does she wear adults clothes?

On the donkey note, I am sorry she was upset by it but it is refreshing to hear of animals used in situations like that actually having their welfare put over making money. I hope he had the sense to deal with the situation sensitively though.
