Isn't this too soon?

To soon for what?

MoreSlidingDoors · 27/07/2019 12:51

My daughter is almost 9 too and has had pubic hair and “boobs” for a while. Took her to see a paediatrician who advised just keeping an eye on her height. Whilst these changes are possibly on the early side, it isn’t super early and things don’t always develop quickly.

dementedpixie · 27/07/2019 12:52

Puberty is not early unless it starts before the age of 8

Alexkate2468 · 27/07/2019 12:57

I have an 8 year old and I think I’d feel the same. She’s still a ‘little girl’ to me. Just keep an eye on her and make sure you talk her through what’s happening (not meaning to be condescending there).

Rainbowhairdontcare · 27/07/2019 13:00

She said the hair is fairly recent, but the boobs started more than a year ago. We thought she was just chubby

There’s a difference between fat and breast buds. You would be able to feel buds, which would indicate puberty is well underway.

Rainbowhairdontcare · 27/07/2019 13:15

Yes, I can feel those buds, but didn't check last year as I assumed she was just chubby (and in denial)

BoB measurements say she's a 30B

I had my first period at 9 so something to be aware of, then had a long gap and didn't have another until I was 10 when they started regularly

Passtherioja · 27/07/2019 15:02

Pop her to the GP if you're concerned-they'll put your mind at rest...just be careful how you explain it to her.

birthdayblues31 · 30/07/2019 07:38

My daughter is 9y2m and is under a paediatric endocrinologist since she started developing at 8y4m. The GP made the referral which alarmed me that something was wrong. She's had a pelvic ultrasound, hand X-ray and blood tests. We're both in agreement to avoid medicating and to let her cycle just happen naturally which the ultrasound predicts will be in about a year. Having said that, I spoke with two mums in the waiting room who have chosen to take up the medication. After 8 is deemed "normal" if early.

Rainbowhairdontcare · 30/07/2019 07:42

Thanks birthday she's definitely younger than when it happened to me, will ask her dad and see what he says.

I took my son to the gp at a similar age as he had a lot of pubic hair. Gp said it was in the early normal range of development . My dd was 8 in may and also has pubic hair and is wearing a crop top bralett type thing on pe days. I’m not taking her as I know it will be the same advice. I shouldn’t worry it’s a bit of a shock tho isn’t it?!

Looneytune253 · 30/07/2019 07:48

My daughter had this when she was this age and started bleeding too just before her 9th birthday. She is a very tall girl tho (13-14 clothes) and the doctors weren't worried too much because of her height etc. It does worry me thought because she is still quite immature still

RancidOldHag · 30/07/2019 07:51

Over 8 is early normal

It's only under that when you're likely to be referred to a paediatric endocrinologist.

Are you happen she knows all she shouid about puberty?

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 30/07/2019 07:56

My dd was referred to an endocrinologist at 7 for early puberty. 8 is considered normal and doesn't warrant a referral (according to our consultant anyway!)

madcatladyforever · 30/07/2019 07:59

That seems so young! !! I was 14 when that happened.

Rainbowhairdontcare · 30/07/2019 08:07

I don't think she'll start bleeding for another year at the very least. She was very excited about her bras and knows the basics about her body changing as well as modesty (that's still a work in progress).

@LeekMunchingSheepShagger our referral was after 8 years old. Different PCTs no doubt have different ideas. We're still under a fab paeds endocrinologist and I've requested another ultrasound as it'll be nice to know/prepared for when she's due to start. I hope we can make it to double figures!

CarrieBlu · 30/07/2019 10:00

I was 8 when I needed a bra and 9 when my periods started. My mum had already explained everything to me and aside from being a bit embarrassed about it all at school, it didn’t cause me any lasting damage.

Char273 · 11/08/2019 18:02

Hi just wondering what the impact on height could be for those girls showing signs of puberty at 8? I am very worried about this for my own daughter, as if periods come earlier, there sounds like there is less growth potential.

Is it possible to still be tall (say 5' 5" +) if you have an early period?

Would people mind sharing height details of daughters who may have started their periods earlier than what is considered average?

I would really appreciate it.

Thank you
