Watching with interest. My 10 year old is asleep for 9:30 and the almost 9 year old roams around till 10. We haven’t sorted pocket money at all.

I am crap.

As the two 11 year olds are starting secondary school we thought it’d be best to start them with pocket money to learn about responsibility etc.

Was thinking £5 each every other weekend and £3 for the younger two.

As for bedtime was thinking 10pm school night for 11 year olds and 9.30pm for younger two.

My 11 year old usually goes to bed for 9ish and tends to read/faff about until 9.30ish. He could do with earlier really!
He gets £10 a month pocket money, paid straight into his bank account and I pay for his phone (cheapest possible GiffGaff SIM) on top of that

Cutantrim · 12/07/2019 14:09

Sounds about right to me.

I started offering small amounts for jobs - only little ones, hoovering the stairs, tidying their room, putting clothes away and making sure the toilet was ok when they’d finished.

That backfired when I heard the youngest telling Granny “if mummy doesn’t give me 50p, I wee on the floor.”Angry

Depends what they are expected to buy with the money. My ds gets £4 a week (mostly goes on Xbox points) but he has also started to do things like go swimming or go to McDonald's with his friends - this takes an alarming amount of money, which is additional to his pocket money. I'm not sure how to manage it really. He also has £7.50 a month for his phone contract (my old iPhone).

Percypigparade · 12/07/2019 14:13

£2.50 a week is peanuts really unless you are picking up most of their expenses. Bedtime - 9.30 for mine, later at the weekends - but that is all relative to how early they need to get up!

beachysandy81 · 12/07/2019 14:16

12 year old - 9pm bedtime in week (sometimes 9.30 and sometimes reads a bit longer), 10pm at the weekend. £5 a week since he was 12, didn't sort this out before then. He meets friends in town or at parks etc now at weekends so the £5 has to covers any expenses from this. He is learning that it is much cheaper to pack a drink and sandwich!

I have a 12 yo and a 9yo
Bedtime for 12yo varies. If he's reading I leave him to turn his own light out but I check on him at 9.30 and say its time to stop now.
Weekend he can stay up longer
He gets £5.50 pocket money a week. It goes straight into his bank account. He then spends it on roblox online. I did say why don't you leave some in there in case you are at the shops and want something, but I dont think he even knows where his cash card is.
He has a phone and I pay for that (Its £8 a month)

9yo bedtime is supposed to be 8.30 but he fannies about a lot and its often nearer 9. It generally stays the same at the weekend.
He gets £4 pocket money, which he spends on dolls generally.
He doesn't have a phone yet.

Have you only just acquired these children?

The style of the posts suggests that somehow...

I give my children 1€ per school year per week, paid monthly based on a 4 week month. The older the child, the more they're out and about without me - if they're out and about without me they pay for themselves. Additionally they pay for things I don't want to buy them outside Christmas and birthday - computer games or toys or sweets just for them.

1€ per school year per week paid monthly based on a 4 week month is obviously 4€ in year 1, 8€ in year 2 etc. 24€ in year 6, 28€ in year 7. Per month.

From year 8 my eldest has had an allowance of 80€ per month but she buys all her own clothes and shoes (we're non uniform) and presents for friends' parties, cinema entrance, swimming pool entrance etc etc - while still on pocket money I pay those things.

What time kids go to bed is utterly meaningless unless you consider what time they have to get up. An 11 year old needs about 9.5 hours sleep so should go to bed 10 hours before they need to get up to allow for half an hour to read/ listen to quiet music or whatever their ritual is to fall asleep.

growlingbear · 12/07/2019 14:58

9.30 school nights. 10-10.30 weekends for bedtime.
I think their pocket money was £5 pw at that age. Enough to start budgeting whether or not they really wanted that comic for £3 or whether they'd rather save up for a few weeks and buy a game or a book.

BrokenWing · 12/07/2019 14:59

Depends on what time he gets up and every child is different. I would go for min of 10hrs sleep needed to start with, in bed at least 30mins before, lights out at least 15 mins before.

If they look tired or moan about getting out of bed in the morning get them to bed 30 mins earlier.
