Sanitary products and swimming

Hi. Any advice welcome! My dd is 12 and recently started periods, still very irregular and can be heavy. I'm worried about going on holiday in summer if she gets her period as she can't use tampons due to a medical issue (seen gp who said just wait but couldn't tell me how long to wait.....) and I know she'll be desperate to go swimming.
I've found some leak proof bikini bottoms, but have to order from america( separate topic but any info on paying import vat would be helpful! 😁)
Wondering if reusable towels with normal bikini bottoms, swimsuit and wetsuit shorts?
I just think surely in 2019 there must be something I've not thought of???
Thank you!!!

I've got no recommendations about the swimming, sorry - tampons all the way here, hope her medicals get better.

The import: if the package gets inspected and is found to be subject to extra import fees of any sort, you'll get a note in the post saying so. Pay that as directed, and the goods will be delivered. If it just turns up at yours, that's it - you're clear.

Have you thought of asking the GP about contraceptive pill, just to stop bleed for that month? I did this at a similar age due to a holiday with a friend and her family.

eeela · 15/04/2019 01:00

Is it just tampons she can't use? Or is it all insertable sanitary products e.g. a cup? I know they sit differently inside the body so it might be worth asking about if it isn't obvious.

christmaseasterbunny · 15/04/2019 10:30

Hi, thanks all. I'll try ordering the bikini bottoms and see what happens tax wise - thank you!
Unfortunately I don't think cups will work either - sorry for tmi, but she has something called septate hymen, so at moment can't use any internal products, I thought gp might recommend small op to help, but we were just told needed to wait but said she had no idea how long it would take ...... Might pop her back to different Dr in few months, (or look to see if any private Dr's would do the op) and ask about the pill at the same time-hadn't thought about that-thank you!!
Thanks again

My gp gave my daughter utovlan to stop her period for last years holiday

SpoonBlender · 15/04/2019 11:15

Friend of mine had septate hymen. She, um, fixed it with scissors. Bit risky, but she was fine.

bellinisurge · 17/04/2019 06:26

My dd has just started (also 12) and I can't assume she'd be regular enough to be period free on holiday.
I had bought a couple of Modibodi knickers for her when I had a flush of cash about six months ago in anticipation of her starting . I am planning to bring these along. They have a uk website and also sell through Amazon.

Dollygirl2008 · 07/05/2019 19:52

Just asking if anyone has an update on this - my daughter is abroad for most of August - she has started her periods and she's only 10 so I'm keen on anyone's experiences with period swimwear. She loves the modibod knickers and I wondered if anyone had tried the swimwear?

christmaseasterbunny · 07/05/2019 20:04

Hi. We haven't tried modibod, but our panty prop bikini bottoms arrived really quickly. We haven't tried "for real" yet-but they look good and feel thick in the gusset.
It's so tough for them isn't!! 🙁

Oh right, I'll take a look at those ones!

I just can't imagine how they'll work in a sunbathing/pool environment! They're in and out the water all day, so I'm not sure if it's a case of swapping between pairs whilst the other ones dry! I guess it will be trial and error...!

Let me know how you get on!!

Madcats · 07/05/2019 20:14

Are the Modibodi/panty prop (or any other brand) any good?

I think we are probably a year away from periods and mine are pretty much done.

For my daughter's sake it would be fab if the swimming suits were any good (but I don't really want to pay ££ if they are not effective). I still can't quite get my head around how they can absorb any more liquid once they have already got wet in the sea/pool.

When i have a holiday planned and I'm scheduled to be on my period I get a prescription of Norethisterone. You start taking it 2-3 days before you are due on and it essentially delays your period starting until you stop taking the pills (1 small pill 3 X a day).

Equally, if her periods are unpredictable, she can start taking them on the day she comes on and the period will stop after approx 2 days.

Advantage of this option over sanitary products or swimwear is you don't get the symptoms (I know for me that was as inconvenient as the bleeding as a teenager)

Ask your GP, it's not a contraceptive but your GP will advise you that. I've used it several times and would always get a prescription (my last holiday I got one even though I wasn't due on, just for peace of mind!)

Hope this helps!

Dollygirl2008 · 07/05/2019 20:20

Exactly! That's what I can't understand!!

My daughter uses the Modibod knickers - honestly, they're amazing - she still wears a pad, but she also has the boy short style which offers security and gives her confidence. No 10 year old should have to go through periods in an ideal world but these have made it a whole lot easier!

Dollygirl2008 · 07/05/2019 20:22

Hi bonnie September - I have heard about that drug but I don't think the GP would prescribe it for a 10 year old. Also, she's away with her dad for two weeks and I'd be concerned her taking a drug she's never had before, whilst she's abroad without me - just incase there's any side effects. But then I do worry....!

BonnieSeptember · 07/05/2019 20:27

@dollygirl2008

Understandable, I think the first time I took it I was about 14. Depends what you are comfortable with in the end.

For me it's a case of being able to afford a holiday abroad probably once every 2 years, there's no way I'm letting my own body ruin it for me lol!

Actually, the last time I went the GP gave me an alternative to Norethisterone, does the same thing but it recommended for ladies who are more suited to progesterone only pill (I couldn't have combined pill due to migraines), so I'm not sure whether that's maybe a more risk free version for a youngster.

Hope you sort it though, I was lucky my periods didn't start until I was about 13, could not imagine going through it at 10! X

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 07/05/2019 20:35

Like a PP said, norethisterone. I had to use it as a teenager for a school coach trip to Germany as I've always had very heavy, painful periods.

christmaseasterbunny · 07/05/2019 21:07

Thanks all. I'm definitely going to chat to our gp about the tablet - although in all honesty I'd rather they just did a small "snip" to sort her hymen...... First gp just told me she felt dd was far too young for me to put her through an examination - which made me feel terrible, but she has heavy periods and I know she'd be more comfortable if she could use tampons!!!!!
I'm going to test the bikini bottoms in the bath on her next period and will feedback-I'm intrigued too. If any good I'm going to order a couple of pairs of the everyday knickers.
The panty prop have a mesh bit to hold in pad, but apparently don't need a pad........ They do reusable pads for them, but say normal pads work. I'm planning to get her to wear bikini bottoms, swimsuit and maybe wetsuit shorts--think it's overkill, but she'd be mortified to leak.
Hope you all find solutions too!

OP posts:
Zaor · 03/06/2019 20:15

@christmaseasterbunny - how did your test go? I was just looking at the panty prop ones but its says 2 weeks to shipping and then 28 days for the normal shipping. its $40 for quicker shipping! I've emailed mobodi to see when they will have theirs in stock.

One thing I read on a review is that the panty prop ones have to have chlorine free pads so you might want to check that out.

My DD goes pale at the mention of tampons so I can't see her trying them. I've even done tampon target shooting across the room to try to get her.
Thanks...

bellinisurge · 04/06/2019 05:50

As a quick fix, dd wore black standardmodibodis under black bikini bottoms - we actually had a little private pool so it wasn't in public. Went fine. She was larking about rather than swimming and it was near the end of her period.

Zaor · 04/06/2019 21:12

Thanks @ballinisurge
She has a pair of those so will look for something to go on top
