Advice on safest hair removal for 9 yr old

Hi, I’m new on here and have searched through a few discussions.
My 9 year old has asked for me to remove the hairs on her legs. Could anyone who has been in a similar situation give me some advice on the best/safest options please? My first thought was hair removal cream but now I’m worried about the chemicals harming her skin so also considering a lady shave. If anyone has experience with either at similar age I would love to hear.

The best advice i can give you is that a 9 year old is far too young and does not need to remove the hair on their legs, you shouldn't encourage it!

Epilator.

As pp said, is there any way you could talk her out of wanting her hair removed?

I can understand that the pressure from peers can be intense but if you start removing now that’s a long haul before she is ready to start doing it safely alone. Is this something you are willing to get into?

Thank you. Yes, we’ve given it a lot of consideration. Our daughter is hurtling towards puberty as I was at her age. She is the size of a 13 year old and very developed but she isn’t into anything remotely ‘teenage’ like music, makeup, clothes. She is extremely sporty and now self conscious about her hairy legs. I want to support her through this because I wasn’t supported and ended up with shredded legs as well as feelings of shame for not being able to cope with my excessive hairiness.

Do they still do razors with bars on? That night be a way of moving forward?

Aargh, I rage at this society which has your DD9 feeling shame about her natural body and my DD8 putting 'training bra' on the top of her Christmas list.
I would do anything I can to normalise body hair (although appreciate this is difficult if you are not 'going natural' yourself) , and failing that, giving her a lady shave. No chemicals and no shredding. I still have one tucked away in a drawer which I got when I was 18, which comes with a shaving head as well as a depilation head, for pulling out the hairs. Having a little machine like this will give her independence and the ability to experiment with hair removal in the privacy of her own room with no risk of cutting herself.

I would have a chat with her about waxing, being honest about the pain, and if she’s not up for that a ladyshave. You can’t generalise about 9 year olds. Mine is very much still a kid but her best friend looks 23!

I shave my dds legs myself it doesn't need to be done very often. Or you could try a hair removal cream just remember to do a patch test.

HailsMcfails · 01/01/2019 20:42

Thanks mumunderthemoon, that is good to know.

I would take her to get them waxed. I have a similar situation with my daughter and she now goes for waxing every 3 months or so. It was more frequent initially but now the growth is much less obvious.

I would be interested in what you decided as a method of hair removal HailsMcFails. My 9 year old DD started developing about 18 months ago (under arm and pubic hair) but has recently said that she is embarrassed lifting her arm as others see the hair and she sweats a lot. She has asked about shaving and other ways of removing the hair under her arms and I have discussed these with her. My view is that in the age of increasing self-esteem and supporting the mental health of our children I don't have an objection to the hair removal. I just find it a mine field deciding on the best way to do this. I've looked at Lady shaves but there are so many!!

GahWhatever · 08/01/2019 14:46

My dark haired youngest DD had a ladyshave from aged 10. Kids are mean.

Lardy0913 · 08/01/2019 15:09

What lady shave did you get as there's so many?!

VivaDixie · 08/01/2019 15:14

Get a decent lafyshave, mine is a Braun silkepil. Not the ones that pull the hair out. I agree that she is young but if you discourage her she will go ahead anyway and shred her legs.

Have a good chat about self confidence, (says I who shaves my legs and gets my eyebrows tinted every month after being teased at school for non existent eyebrows)

I have the same issue with my DD also 9, her legs are very hairy. She is now starting to notice them. We havnt got to the point of her asking to remove them yet. I have been looking at the home laser hair removal devices, they seem costly, but i dont want to go down the shaving route yet
