12 year old and body odour help

My son has started smelling even after wearing roll on deodorant and showering regularly.
Is this normal for a 12 year old? Is there anything else I can do other than make sure he showers and clean clothes every day etc? People have started commenting about him and it's affecting him
What deodorant do people recommend? He can't have a spray.

Proper bar soap in the shower - even if only for "pits and bits" plus anti-perspirant rather than just deodorant.

I was in a similar situation with my son. We tried so many things and nothing worked until he started using the Mitchum roll on. It lasts all day and always smells fresh now.

sollyfromsurrey · 14/11/2018 11:39

Make sure he is using an 'antiperspirant deodorant' one stops sweating the other stops smells. It needs to be both. At 12 boys can start to smell dreadful. It's different from usual smells as it's very hormonal. Their heads can smell of sebum as soon as it's dried from a shower. Their feet too can stink immediately after washing. It passes but for about a year or so it is rank.

NoLogicInThis · 14/11/2018 11:47

I always thought anti perspirant was bad for kids, something to do with the aluminium in it?
I will look into Mitchum roll on and see how he goes as he does have allergies so it's finding the right one that doesn't cause any trouble

Silky question but can kids just use the ordinary adult Mitchum roll on then?

I was going to suggest Mitchum too it’s bomb proof

OohMrDarcy · 14/11/2018 11:55

My almost 12yo DD can be a bit like this, we now have her showering daily, fresh everything including school shirt (she could previously wear for a few days until dirty), anti persperant deoderant (steals my DOVE one), and airing her room regularly and more regular washing of bedding too!

We are on top of it as long as we follow those things.

adaisy1394 · 14/11/2018 11:57

RE Mitchum just get the men’s one or if he is sensitive there is an unscented one which works just as well and he can then add his own smell on top eg Lynx or whatever the kids wear these days

BibiThree · 14/11/2018 11:59

Definitely anti perspirant, also school shirts washed on 60° with biological washing powder to break down sweat. We found dd's clean shirts stank as soon as they warmed up on her body, until we started washing on 60°.

HoppingPavlova · 14/11/2018 12:11

At that age, and for years after we had to change from general roll on to a ‘clinical’ antiperspirant. We found the Mitchum clinical stick (it’s solid) was the only thing that worked and it had to be a good layer, or it’s like living with a skunk. Seriously they can even have a shower, scrub themselves and half an hour later reel the house out. It’s hormones.

Air the bedroom regularly to get rid of the boy funk and we found soaking all tops in a bio soaker before washing helped as just throwing them in the general wash didn’t get the stink out.

They do come out the other side of this.

HoppingPavlova · 14/11/2018 12:12

*reek the house out

AlexanderHamilton · 14/11/2018 12:16

Ds was awful around that age but it only lasted for approx 6 months or so.. He used to shower 3 times a day.

He found that in addition to proper anti persperant carrying deoderant underarm wipes around helped. They come in a pack similar to baby wipes. Also making sure he used actual shampoo not just body wash in the shower.

HoppingPavlova · 14/11/2018 12:17

I didn’t find this problem with girls but I’m sure it exists for some to some extent.

I do remember sleep overs with groups of boys. I only allowed sleep overs in summer and made them use tents in the backyard. They thought it a fun experience. It saved me having to burn the house down to get rid of the smell. I also remember dreading driving a car full if boys at that stage, I would have all windows down and still be unable to breathe. They never seemed to be able to smell it on each other Confused.

toomanycuddlytoys · 16/11/2018 20:21

Sure spray, the antibacterial one. Never had any bad smells from our Ds since he started to use it

LakeFlyPie · 16/11/2018 20:29

Agree bar soap and proper scrub of pits and a vigorous head scrub with shampoo is necessary. DS has just progressed from a 'natural' roll on deodorant to an antiperspirant and it's made a big difference

We also use the dettol additive to washing, can't remember what it's called which really helps take the ingrained smell out of clothes. Our routine here is anti bacterial deodorant, clean crop bra and shirt daily, showers in the evening and fresh pj top on every night, for the first week this week we have t had to wash her school blazer every day

Chiali07 · 26/11/2018 17:55

I have this issue with 11yr DD .The one mistake I was making is that trying to be health concious. I was buying deodorant that was aluminium free and unfortunately that meant it was effective for a very short period of time and she would just sweat through it . I do also find it helps to apply roll on at night after bath/shower with bar soap and again in am . That helps a lot . Goodnluck with it

IronManSucks · 26/11/2018 18:02

Pitrock / Salt of the Earth / etc is amazing stuff. Stopped me throwing away shirts after a couple of months due to impregnated whiff. Environmentally friendly and lasts forever.

NoLogicInThis · 26/11/2018 20:19

I too made that mistake trying to find aluminium free which did nothing really

OP posts:
Unusualusernames · 18/12/2018 18:47

I’m marking my spot here because I’m yet to find an aluminium free deodorant that worked

ChristmasTwatteryDoesMyHeadIn · 18/12/2018 18:49

Shield or coal tar soap is great, and DS1 (11) uses adult Mitchum roll on.

Plaiceholder · 19/12/2018 20:23

A rock salt one like PitRock or Salt of the Earth. Incredible. Stop any whiffs, last forever, environmentally friendly.

Plaiceholder · 19/12/2018 20:24

Oops didn't realise this was an old post!
