When did you get a period starter kit for your dd?

And what did you put in it?

Dd has just turned 9. Not showing any signs yet but I want to be ready. I use a mooncup so I don’t have any sanpro in the house. What should I get for her? Should it just be a range of products, or would it be nice to include things like a hot water bottle and pain killers and things like that?

I imagine showing it to her fairly soon and talking through all the options. She knows all the theory already, but I’d like her to know what’s there for when she needs it.

Any tips?

I think there is actually a ready-made set already on the market for just this. Will have a look and see if I can find it and see what's in it.

This is an example of one. Younger kids might not like the idea of tampons so might prefer sanitary towels, but there probably is something on the market by Always or something also.

Has she any puberty development? When did you start your periods? No harm in being prepared, but it may not happen for 3-5 years yet. You will have more idea of these things re your own DD than anyone on MN.

FWIW, DD1 is 12 and I just bought a pack for her a couple of months ago to keep in her room. She has known about periods since she was much younger but her breasts only started developing this year.

Thanks, that looks good.

I actually meant to put in a question about mooncups in too. What do you think to putting one in too? I hated both pads and tampons when I was younger and a mooncup has been a revelation since I discovered them 8/9 years ago. I may as well let it be an option. She knows I use one.

That looks really nice! People vary so much on eBay they use that it can be quite difficult. I use a Mooncup now but started off with sanitary towels and then moved on to tampons. At school I used to carry at least 4-6 tampons, a night sanitary towel (they were longer!), spare knickers and some wet wipes.

Maybe take a two pronged approach? Stuff for when she is out, and a little basket for home? Maybe some paracetamol, a small bar of chocolate, a DVD (Wonder Woman!), a hot water bottle and a variety of towels and tampons? She won't want them right away but maybe when she's a bit more confident?

Make it a celebratory thing. I still remember how my mum approached it all so much so that I didn't tell her when I first started. I waited a few days until I needed more sanitary towels and didn't have any money to buy them

Bobbins43 · 11/12/2017 06:09

I would go for it re the Mooncup. She might find it a bit tricky to insert and remove first off (plus the ick factor) but they really are far more convenient

OwtFerNowt · 11/12/2017 06:09

berlioz she’s been a bit stinky occasionally, but that’s about it. I guess it’s a way off yet, but like you say, no harm to have something shoved in a cupboard for the future.

In my experience they tend to prefer what their peers are using, so if it's tampons they're all using that's what they'll go for, or Always Ultra, that's what they'll go for. I'm not sure moon-cups would feature with teens. I doubt they've even heard of them. Might be a step too far for a little one! She's only young yet. You've probably a couple of years, but just her having an awareness of what's out there is probably good.

OwtFerNowt · 11/12/2017 06:11

I started at 11 I think. I was at secondary school anyway.

From around 9/10 DD had an 'emergency kit' in her PE bag at school - just in case. (Clean knickers, bag to put dirty ones in, 2 pads). Weren't needed for 3 years.

Buttercupsandaisies · 16/12/2017 11:17

I don't think you need to massively over prepare. DD started a few months ago having turned 12. First few months only needed a panty liner and she's had no pains whatsoever. Just buy basics and extend if needs be. It can take a good few months to stabilise

hendricksyousay · 16/12/2017 11:20

I put it in her bathroom from aged 11. She hid it but was pleased when it started and she could use whatever she wanted . I got a selection of different types so she could choose .

CountFosco · 16/12/2017 11:22

I'm going to get a moonstone ring for the DDs when they start (along with tampons, pads etc).

PurplePillowCase · 16/12/2017 11:25

I would just get a pack of towels and liners and leave them near the toilet in a pretty container. private but not scary.

dementedpixie · 16/12/2017 11:26

I got the lillets starter kit too. The bag is handy for school. She found the pads were too small though and prefers the big bulky kotex pads instead. She used to leak with the shorter ones whereas far fewer leaks with kotex. She has tried tampons but only on holiday when she used the pool. Tampax do a lites version that are thinner and easier to insert. She started at age 11 but I had bought stuff well before that.

ShiningWhit · 16/12/2017 11:42

You have about a year from when her boobs start budding- we used the killers starter set but I just got tons of different brands for dd to try - inc tampons. I think keeping an open line of communication is key. We don't do chocolate or moaping for periods.
We also got some protective pants. Think and Dairy something ? They saved her in school when she leaked.
I did however remind her that should she have sex from now on in without protection she could get pregnant. Quite harsh but needed to be said.
Good luck.

Megabeth · 17/12/2017 17:54

A lot of my daughter’s friends have started but my DD is very slightly built so I’m hoping she’s got another year until she does. She’s 11.5 but is small for her age. I want to encourage her to use tampons or a cup because she dances a lot and it will be easier. She’s already requested a glittery MeLuna cup Grin

With my eldest I must have given her an emergency kit but thankfully she started during the 6 week holiday.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 17/12/2017 21:29

I will encourage Dd to use a moon up because they've changed my life but they are best when you've got a sink right next to the loo. She might not want to tip the blood down the loo as it pools and doesn't always flush. And the sinks at school are often in a row outside the cubicles. I definitely would not have wanted to deal with that when I started.

Rowgtfc72 · 18/12/2017 20:20

Dd has had her lillets kit since she was nine, she's nearly eleven now. She's had boobs since seven and is now a 30 b.
I was last year of primary when I started my periods.
She's quite moody in a regular cycle so I wouldn't thought it would be long. She's also 5ft 4 and 8 and a half stone so adult sized.

mumzuki · 01/01/2018 17:18

DD1 just turned 10 - I've got a selection of tampons and towels squirrelled away for when the time comes, along with some nice bubble bath and a vague plan to have some kind of celebration afternoon tea or something. DD knows where they are and we all (DD1, DD2, DH & I) spent some time looking through it all recently, tried out unwrapping tampons and both girls had a go at sticking pads in their pants and wore them for a bit, just to see how it felt. DD had been worrying about it a bit and that seemed to help.

Frogletmamma · 01/01/2018 17:22

DD had one period (aged 10) then nothing for 3 months. I also started at 10. She is getting sweaty and moody and getting boobs so its only a matter of time. Got her some towels and we will take it from there.
